I am currently painting units for the action known as Indian Field, 31 Aug 1778. The British Grenadier scenario book vol 3 refers to 2 elite British units as: "Ewald's Company" and "Lorey's Company". Unfortunately, there is no additional info about these units. Eg Were they British regulars/flank coys , or perhaps just Loyalist units? Any info about them and their most likely uniforms that would assist in choosing appropriate figures and painting them would be greatly appreciated. |

DG, both are Hessian Jaeger detachments, led by Cpts. Johann Ewald and Friedrich Lorey. Here's a couple nice links with period maps – link link Based on the maps linked above, here's the little skirmish I ran of Indian Field a few years back with 15s (best of luck with yours!) -

The Crown forces at Kingsbridge on 31 August 1778 were composed of Ewald's German jägers, Provincials from the Queen's Rangers, under Simcoe, and 'Chasseurs' under Emmerich. These included mounted elements joined by others from Cathcart's 'Legion' under Tarleton. I believe Captain Lorey was a jäger officer under Ewald. Ewald's diary refers to the action and the days preceding here: link There's a very nice, zoomable colour image of the map from Ewald's diary here: link {EDIT} Well, how's that for the 'hive mind'? |

With the Stockbridge and Americans so badly outnumbered, was it really much of a game? How did you manage the numbers? |

In the game pictured above (my own scenario), I brought in American troops that were in area that hadn't intervened, and Emmerick and Ewald originally had gone to the wrong DeVoe home, so they were delayed in their blocking role. I'll tweak history in order to make for a better scenario (especially so for ones recorded as a massacre). |

I tweak history when I game the Wyoming Massacre too. |

I was looking at this the other night as a disguised scenario. I was going to put it on in the war of 1812 on the Niagara area. Americans ambushing a Canadian/British detachment. |

Excellent looking table. You should be proud. |

Thanks everyone, and especially to FlyX and 42Flanker. I had thought of balancing the scenario by allowing the Americans to do a bit of ambushing, then make a fighting withdrawal. Very interesting indeed that the 2 elite units turn out to be Hessian jager. If Ewald's coy wondered off a bit on the day, I shall probably leave it out, but include Lorey's thus nicely helping balance of forces w/o too much abuse of history. |

FlyX I have now had time to read those excellent accounts and save them to my scenario file. Very interested to see that Ewald left the only contemporary painting of a Stockbridge Indian. Alas, the only Brit Grenadier scenario where they appear, but in honour of their sacrifice I will use Ewald's picture to convert and add a unit of these brave men to my 15mm collection. |

That'll be the icing on the cake DG (beings it's Thanksgiving here today)! :) |

Ewald is one of the most interesting figures in the AWI. |
