During the American Civil War (1861-1865), the State of Iowa contributed food, supplies, and troops for the Union Army, though its contributions were overshadowed by larger and more populated Union states. Iowa is a state located in the Midwestern United States, an area often referred to as the "American Heartland." The state was a part of the French colony of New France.
