Magnus Carlsen of Norway vs Fabiano Caruana of USA/Italy. Game 6 is underway as I type. The match has seen 5 consecutive drawn games. I catch the analysis on Adagmator's YouTube channel. The first game ran for 7 hours, and Adag moves it along at around 20 minutes. He's a real fanboy from Croatia, and reminds me of Congressman-elect Dan Crenshaw, without the eyepatch. I've just started watching his YouTube channel. One of the things that startled me was how much real players value their pawns. Me? I know how to move the pieces. I couldn't tell you the difference between the King's Indian and Nimzovich variation of the …. I had heard of the Sicilian Defense, but could never figure out why. I'm Anyway, if you catch the live match now, you can hear thick foreign accents waiting 20 minutes for Magnus to move his bishop one square. I'll catch the recap tonight. |

I don't know, Winston--identical forces on a board with NO terrain? From here, it looks like bad scenario design. |

But the points are even, so it is a great tournament game. |

Not to mention how easy it is to paint the minis |

No – I'm watching paint dry, far more exciting. |

Seems to rank below watching bowling or golf to me, and I never watch those. Less action in chess. |

An 80 move draw! And after only 6-1/2 hours! Game 7 tomorrow. Be still my beating heart. Did I ever tell you about a Magic the Gathering match I saw on ESPN2? Well, I was in the hospital with poor tv service. They didn't have PRISM cable and I couldn't watch the Friday Night Stripper show.

Absolutely watching it. I also use Agadmator's channel for analysis. |

Actually, Game 7 is Sunday. Saturday is a rest day. Carlsen with the white. |

When I was a serious tournament player (last century) I followed the matches very carefully. Now I am content to read a recap, basically when it's all over. |

Game 8 just ended in a draw. So far, all the games have drawn. |

Yes! USA! USA! Go Fabiano! Never seen so many draws. |

Okay, I'm not that good of a chess player, but even I could see that Caruana's pawn move on turn 24 in Game 8 was a feeble choice. Move the Queen, dude! But no, he moved the pawn…and produced YET another draw. I even set up a board and tested it. Move the Queen to h5, and you threaten Black's backfield and set up lots of ways to win. The pawn to h3 just gives up the pressure White's been building. Of course, I'm not playing the 8th title game in a row against the reigning champion with the world watching me and commenting on my every decision… And on to game 9 tomorrow… |

By the way, what really impresses (and confuses me) is how both players can look at a board still full of pieces and conclude that further play will only result in a draw. Are they really thinking it all the way through to the end, or are they each just not willing to risk an embarrassing screw-up move that hands the win to the other guy? Ah, well, not a tournament player, so maybe there's something I don't see in the situation. |
