I see some of these listed on some sites, but a lot of the older, more popular ones appear to be missing.

Are they gone forever, or just temporarily unavailable?

For example, the Fokker D-VII, early WoW WWI aircraft (1st production run), etc.?

I don't even see any listed on eBay anymore, either.

Are there any other good sources for buying/trading some of the apparently more now rare, coveted types?

Ares Games has announced a reprint cycle of the various series starting in the first quarter of next year. You can see pictures from the Essen toy fair this October here: link

So, yay! The missing planes will be coming back, and hopefully the various retail sources will have them in stock again before spring.

Thanks for the info, and update.

That is good news.

Bag them when you see them. Reprints tend to sell out quickly

Well, be sure to leave me a couple of Spad XIII, Camels, & Dr. I, because that's what I'm needing to boost my own areodromes!
(The sign says they'll be out in the 1st Quarter of next year, so hopefully January rather than March, but I'll take ‘em whenever they come!)
I'm also eagerly awaiting the return of the long missing SE5!!! Possibly the best plane of the late war, and you can't get one!?!? But at least now they're saying "2nd Quarter," so I'll be checking for those in April…

The link below has a list of all the sources for 1:144 WWI aircraft models. You've got a lot of choice if you're willing to paint them yourself, but your pre-painted choices are pretty limited.
