Would the wooden tool (rammers, trail spikes etc.), be painted the same colour as the gun carriages? Or would they be black since the artillery's "wood" is supposed to be black? Thanks.

I couldn't help myself so I went ahead and built a 28mm monitor to oppose my Confederate Ironclad link

Just realized tools would also be painted with the same green paint. So only have a very few with green rammers and pry handles. Now how hard would they be used and paint staying on? But a raw wood handle in weather how long would they last?

Wouldn't the wood gun carriages be in the same state? I would assume that at the beginning of planning a campaign wood work would get repainted as needed, as well as all the other clobber that needs to be fixed.

Also don't forget that the black wheel rims were painted thus. After perhaps a mile's march, they would be back to bare metal. AIUI these areas and other high wear areas such as around wheel hubs were often left unpainted and just oiled on campaign to keep rust at bay. The natty black paint job would be for back at barracks.

I have no idea how seeing uniform plates and equipment of Russians all these years and just realized they should be painted. Yet it seems the Prussians didn't, at least uniform plates don't show that. I have a lot of Russian batteries.

Hate to see anyone go down a dead end road like I did.

Might not stay a pretty green colour for long after being rammed down a cannon barrel multiple times by gunners with increasingly dirty hands. Maybe a bit of sooty black over the original green?

Cheers,
John
