Two questions: does anyone know the names and ranks of the army level artillery commanders in the French Army of Portugal during Massena's and Marmont's respective terms of command?

Also, does anyone know where a comprehensive listing of that army's artillery assets at any point in the 1810-12 timeframe might be found?

Apologies for the preceding posts- this place is buggier than a flophouse blanket.

You should be able to find that info at the Nafziger files.

Both Oman and Pelet are two references which may be helpful. For the Army of Portugal when Massena commanded, both Generals Eble and Ruty were assigned to that army, and I'm looking to see who was the artillery chief of the army itself.

Taking a look at Six's dictionary would also be helpful. I'll get back to you when I find something definitive.

Brechtel19813 Nov 2018 6:11 a.m. PST

According to Georges Six' dictionary, Eble was the artillery commander of the Army of Portugal under Massena.

A good place to start looking for the artillery assets of the French armies in Spain is Oman. You might also want to take a look at Nick Lipscombe's Atlas of the Peninsular War.

Thanks- that's very helpful.

John Gill put an order of battle together for Fuentes de Onoro. It doesn't answer the French artillery commanders, but he does give the numbers and types of French artillery present at that battle.

Thanks very much- this is all interesting and useful stuff. It's interesting to see how much the artillery organization within the corps still resembles that of the 1805-1807 timeframe (minus the twelve pounders) rather than anticipating the 1812-14 organization.

I'm not an expert on the Army of Portugal or French organization more generally, but in going through a couple of period OoBs from 1805 through Vitoria, I was struck by how comparatively stable the regimental assignments to the 1st and 2nd Divisions of the 6th Corps on the OOB shown above were. Divisions came and went from the corps, as did commanders, and the divisions' numbering changed, but those two divisions were basically formed out of the same set of regiments from the time they marched away from the Channel until Salamanca. Which is nice from the gamer's perspective: you can paint them and use them for a wide range of scenarios.
