Damage video has been posted:
YouTube link

Roll # of d6s for gun(s). Add total. Deduct from ship's Hull Points.

There wasn't any dice for MGs or small weapons, so maybe just 20mm and larger?

Or…maybe get one die when in point blank range?

And when do we see Bridge/Engine/Fire damage?

Inquiring minds want to know!

A video that creates more questions than it answers.

Yeah, Warlord is trying too hard to create suspense. Seriously. Look at the Videos Rich Clarke posts on Toofatlardies Youtube channel. Just show a full playthrough example. Warlord's choice is especially puzzling because they stand to make far more revenue from the sale of models than from the rules.

Agreed!

codiver13 Nov 2018 7:16 a.m. PST

If that really is all there is to it – just a overall "hit point" value for the entire vessel – that seems quite boring and unimaginative.

Also to me at least, the ship card for the S-boat did nothing for me…

Not too surprising. Simple game, plays fast, and probably finishes in under 2 hours, which is what most gamers are after nowadays. Warlord sells a ton of figs and the rules are just a mechanism to get gamers to buy more figs. Whether the rules are good or not is secondary in their marketing/sales plan. It's just the current state of the hobby and you can't blame them for giving the people what they want.

Red358413 Nov 2018 7:52 a.m. PST

Disappointing if that's all there is too it, but I'll reserve judgement until there's more detail.

Even if the game isn't as good as we hope, the models will be use for the excellent 'Action Stations'

Well, personally, I find the videos annoying: they are too short and the (marketing) idea of leaving your demographic 'hanging' until the next video is posted escapes me. If you want me, as a consumer, to use your rules then explain them as per the posts above.

What excites me is the scale / models.I don't know enough about the rules at this point to make any judgements but there are other sets available.

Schogun13 Nov 2018 8:26 a.m. PST

Warlord mentioned doing a play-through video. I hope these aren't it.

Maybe it'll arrive just after pre-order is over.

"Warlord mentioned doing a play-through video. I hope these aren't it."

Agreed. My pre-orders are in but for me it's about the models and the fact that the larger scale allows for modeling / detailing that isn't possible in 1/600 or 1/1200.

Ahoy!

We're doing loads of videos for this game and for our other systems – some short and to the point and others more in-depth.

It's a fine line between short sharp videos where we're sometimes accused of not giving enough details and longer, more in-depth affairs which we're told are too long. Your comments will help us get this balancing act right so thanks for your thoughts.

The video here doesn't cover so many aspects of damage that are involved in the game – critical hits, engine damage, etc. There is a lot more to ship damage in Cruel Seas than seen in the few seconds of video – we'll bring you more as soon as we can.

Cheers,

Paul Sawyer

Thanks, Paul. The ships are excellent (!) but I think many of us are waiting to see more of how the game plays before committing.

Red358413 Nov 2018 12:48 p.m. PST

I'm already committed grin

Looking forward to the game. Personally I'd prefer a longer playthough video than the drip feed approach though

Joe Legan13 Nov 2018 2:19 p.m. PST

I committed based on the ships alone. If the rules are good that is gravey. I too would like a video explaining basic gameplay. I suspect even the most cretin gamer can sit through 3 minutes of actual information sharing

JL: +1

carne6813 Nov 2018 7:58 p.m. PST

Joe Legan-Agreed. The ships look amazing. I too will be buying some. I just think their plan for releasing preview videos isn't very well thought out.

Andy Tea14 Nov 2018 3:24 a.m. PST

I really like the look of but I'm waiting for more information before committing

3 minute snippet videos are a bit annoying as they are not really telling me anything but then again I don't have time to sit through a 2 hour play through and discussion

a 20-30 minute high level over view would be good for me

Bozkashi Jones14 Nov 2018 10:40 a.m. PST

The mechanics don't really excite me so far – there doesn't seem to be anything particularly innovative there. In view of Warlord's Bolt Action rules, which do contain and interesting activation/orders mechanic, I was expecting to see something more innovative.

Hectic, fast paced actions such as coastal forces would seem to work best with some tense 'who will get the shot in first' mechanic.

As these are just 2/3 minute clips it may be that there are new and interesting mechanics that we haven't seen yet, so I'll wait and see.

The one thing that I will say is that, in my experience, Warlord do produce very playable games (I don't choose to play BA, but when I do I have fun), so even if this isn't my cup of tea, if it moves naval more into the mainstream then I'm quite happy with that as suppliers and designers will follow making for more choice.

I do, however, like some of the design ideas – the wakes to keep track of speed, for example – that's cool and it looks good! And the boat record cards are neat and well designed from what I can see – and having some sort of measure ON the card itself seems like a genius idea! Mind you, as I prefer destroyer actions I'd need jolly big record cards to measure out the range of even a 4.7"!

As for the models – I'm sure they will not disappoint…

Nick

Please don't misunderstand my comment- I would like 3 minutes of ACTUAL information sharing on the video. The 3 minute snippets currently have about 40 seconds of actual new information per video. The shooting, damage, critical (if it comes) could have all been combined into 1 3-4 minute video.

I too like the cards. I figure the game will be simple and quick play. I can house rule it to suit my tastes. ( Will probably convert to hexes and open up the ground scale a bit so MGs can fire the range shown on the video.)
The models should be smashing!

Don't worry Joe – I was only communicating my thoughts, not criticising anybody else's! Sorry if that didn't come across clearly

Joe Legan16 Nov 2018 2:04 p.m. PST

Boz
Didn't take it as criticism so no worries and agree with your points. I too hope the game has some good points to it
Cheers

More info from article in the latest issue of WI:

When you roll d6's for damage, any natural 6 is a roll on the critical hit table affecting crew, bridge, rudder, etc.

It feels to me that ships will sink or be ineffective quite quickly.

Schogun: thanks for posting that!

I'm going to have to buy that Wargames Illustrated!

I also think that the wake cards are a brilliant idea, so Bravo Zulu to whoever thought that up. Play aids should make the game look better, in addition to play easier!
