Looking for a little help here. I am in the middle of painting Grenadier Regiment Rall, and finishing up the brigade (Knyphausen, Lossberg, Rall and brigade commander). But I am stumped by a couple uniform questions. Right now it concerns the grenadier cap and the regimental coat. Grenadier cap. The post American Rev War watercolor has the cap with a brass front and base and blue bag on the rear with white tape. Early Triani illustrations have a brass front and base with red bag on the rear. Yet his later illustrations have brass front, red base and blue bag. Where did he get the information from? On the regimental coat. The period illustration has a plain coat but the modern illustrations have white lace. Again where did this come from? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. |

I had the same question regarding hat bag. In the case of conflicting sources, I go with what looks coolest. It has served me well. As for lace, if it's not cast in the figure, I often ignore it. |

Grenadierregiment Rall is a rather tricky affair: There are no contemporary sources. Most sources show the regiment in their uniforms after the war. This is how I painted my regiment: link The Thalmann illustrations (1786) show the cap with a brass front and base and blue bag on the rear with white tape. Later illustrations of the Hessian Land Grenadierregiment show a brass front, red base and blue bag with white tape as the later Troiani illustrations have. This seems correct to me. The Rall regiment was a "Land Grenadierregiment", which means that it was more of a militia regiment than a proper grenadier unit. By the way: The Thalmann illustrations contain several flaws. The white lace is rather fictitious, I think (although I painted my grenadiers with white lace). |

One source for Rall figures is the Foundry SYW Freikorps range. No lapels. That's all I was really looking for, and I got a close out deal for them on sale. For the life of me I can't remember if they wear overalls or gaiters. I cheerfully mix overalls and gaiters figures, justifying it on supply difficulties. |

link I hope this link helps. The Darmstadt Manuskript dates from 1784, 2 years earlier than the Thalmann illustrations |

Thank you very much for your help and assistance. I think, after reviewing your information you shared i will go with the brass, blue and red grenadier cap and the cost without lace. Again thank you all for the help and assistance. It is greatly appreciated. |
