I've watcheda a few minutes of it. And I found it strange. The predominance of French and the fact that it's set in Canada hints at pre French and Indian war. But the British uniforms are warrant 1768. |

NEVER judge a show by its uniforms. Most of the time they use whatever looks close and fits their budget. They are entertainers, not documentary makers. |

Yet Outlander got it quite well. Don't know if they are perfect. But they clearly use mid 18th century uniforms. If STAR can get it right. Then I think Discovery should to, they are supposedly about science and history. |

It would be late 18th century as the Hudson's Bay Company did not open inland trading posts until 1774 As Extra Crispy sez, they used the uniforms they had in the closet |

I would tend to stick to the "don't let history interfere with a good (or in this case exceedingly bloody but good enough) story" hypothesis. My guess is that they are trying to capture the period where the North West Company was set up in opposition to the HBC – somewhere around 1770 – and Gunfreaks observation about the uniform fits this. No mention of the American War of Independence so proably prior to 1776. The traders are all based in Quebec so the use of French is believable even post the French Indian Wars. Heck, even now, there are pockets in Quebec where "Je ne parle pas Anglais", and in Manitoba where the fort is based, there is a strong (though bilingual) Franco-Manitoban community. |

It's hard to get an exact fix on when Frontier is set because of the terrible costuming but I think it is sometime post 1779 as that's when the Northwest Company, the first major opposition to the Hudson's Bay Company, was formed. That would fit with some of the costumes and soldiers would probably be in 1768 warrant uniforms. However, uniforms are all over the place. Captain Chesterfield's looks more like one from the French and Indian War 20 years earlier. He also has a beard – which no respectable 18th Century gentleman would have and he swears, another no no! For all it's faults Outlander's costume and sense of the mid 18th Century is much more accurate and convincing (although the Black Jack Randall character is totally unbelievable). |

Season 1, episode 6 the Battle of Bunker Hill is mentioned as already being fought. |

Season 2, episode 4 Charleston says he served the crown and Pond says he served the other side, obliquely implying the war is over. |

There is also mention of the Ferguson rifle. Vlad Tetukin takes one from the Virginia slave holder. The Ferguson rifle was in production from 1776-1778. |
