OK, I am considering doing the Boxer Rebellion and in particular attacks on the Consulate area.

I'd like to use 28mm figures.

I'd like to have small units of various national troops defending the consulate buildings. Some Boxers and some Imperial troops too.

I'd like to fit it all onto a 6x4 table.

I am able to scratch some buildings and hope to purchase some period MDF buildings.

Can you suggest a figure manufacturer(s) especially compatible with each other?

Can you suggest a set of rules, ideally fast play?

Any other useful advice?

Old Glory has a ton of Boxer Rebellion figs

This is a project I've always fancied doing.

Old Glory might be a good place to start, especially to build up the required hordes – the price is right and the sculpts are good. I've always liked the look of the Redoubt range, but am not sure on their availability – I seem to recall people having trouble getting orders, with no contact from the new proprietor, so some caution may be called for. Tastes vary, but I really like the look of the small range by EMP: link They cover several of the European forces and have some nice looking Boxers. Simpler sculpts, but full of character, and they look like they'd be fun to paint.

Unfortunately I'm not able to help you with the compatibility question. Maybe someone else can provide guidance?

Old Glory just about everything you are going to need. Some people complain about some of the head positions but they are easily fixed.

If you are willing to consider 15/18mm you should consider Blue Moon's excellent Boxer Rebellion range which includes some very nice legation sets of buildings. link

Redoubt Enterprises do a characterful and comprehensive 28mm range. Worth looking at Victorious Miniatures and Ironclad Miniatures for more rank & file Boxers but neither have expanded their ranges for the Europeans. Some Chinese from the Gringos40 and Foundry ranges are useful.

Rules: I'm planning to use MWWBK with some period-specific tweaks.

If you want to do something other than Peking, there's a great scenario book from Skirmish Campaigns (?) covering Seymour's relief expedition.

BUT, had I not already got 300+ Boxers waiting in the lead pile, I would be very tempted to do the whole thing using the Blue Moon 18mm range for the sheer mass appeal.

List here. As Basha said, some figures from the Taiping Rebellion ranges may be suitable as well…

Note that Warbases is doing a Kickstarter of Chinese Buildings. Worth a look. WB has always done me good service. OG range is excellent. My group did a large scale BR project using my BFE 2 rules. We bout the entire OG range in numbers. Excellent.

The Boxer Rebellion has been on my long term interest list for quite a while.

I was speaking to Martin of Warbases just yesterday and his kickstarter got me thinking.

Jim pop on over to Victorious miniatures site or our facebook page. We do a fairly good range of Boxers and Chinese regulars plus artillery.
In the pipeline the Dowager Empress, prince Tuan, a general, peasants, the Legation troops are being sculpted as I type by Mark Sims [Crusader] we have a Colt mg for the Americans and "Betsy" the international gun.
The figures are compatible with Copplestone and Perry. we intend to expand the range over the next year to cover all the allied troops.[I hope].

Old Glory's Boxer Uprising and Wargame Foundry's Taiping Rebellion lines look great together. OG has a very nice set of street barricades useful for helping the defenders plug those vulnerable gaps in defenses. Possession of an OG Army card will make purchase of it's figures very affordable. If you can find them on the secondary market, Bob Murch used to make some terrific Chinese gang figures that mix in well with OG and Foundry. Depending upon your tolerance of scale creep, there are nice figures available from some newer manufacturers.
For rules I use either modified TMWWBK or set of unpublished convention rules by Tim Wright.

Another set of rules for sieges is " The Natives Are Restless". Can be a real nail biter.

Can anyone send me a scan of the Boxer Rebellion article from Wargames Illustrated #27 or at worst sell me a copy of the magazine.

The 55 Minutes at Peking is an excellent way to recreate the Boxer Uprising. I built the entire layout and have played a number of times. It was done by the Staines War-game Club, overview here on their site

There was an earlier article in Miniature Wargames, but the WI is a bit better

It is easier to send you something if you give an email address:)

Many thanks for all the info received so far.

Enough to keep me going for a while.

Hello, I've noticed that no one has mentioned the new 28mm Boxer / Colonial line from Stan Johansen. They fit in well size wise with with all the current mfgrs. I really like these figs and they paint up really well. Check out my blog for a recent size comparison post matching the French Sailors against the awesome Gringos 40 Tonkin FFL figs which will give you an idea of how they match up with other mfgrs. I've also attached a link to Stan's troops.

Some of those Stan Johansen are conversions of Peter Gilder figures. Indeed, some are barely conversions -- two Boxer officers simply have new heads on an otherwise Gilder-sculpted body from his Sudan range Dervishes.

The painted figure on the left, above, is based on a Dervish rifleman, although this is clearly a more significant conversion.

Hm…..is this kosher?

Do the Victorious Miniatures and EMP Miniatures Boxer rebellion Ranges mingle with Old Glory and Wargames Foundry Boxer rebellion ranges?

They dont have to be exact matches, just not ridiculously mismatched.

I am more interested in using personality figures and the occasional officer for variety than actually mixing the men in units.
