…. Is the Big Threat in Asia.

"China's rapid military buildup is focused on acquiring the capabilities needed to annex, or conquer, Taiwan. That's the truth.

It is clearly in the American interest to develop a nuanced understanding of the threat China poses to Taiwan, and to cultivate a strategy that takes this into account. Indeed, it is often the case that only by thinking tragically can tragedy be avoided. It is also true that in the absence of understanding many will buy into Chinese propaganda.

A Chinese diplomat in Washington recently threatened that China would invade Taiwan if the U.S. Navy sent a ship to visit the democratic island, something that Congress has called upon the Pentagon to do in 2018. Is this just empty rhetoric? Or does it reflect Beijing's actual intentions? It's actually a bit of both…."

Not empty rhetoric at all ‘ In the words of the PLA field manual, "We must annihilate our (Taiwanese) enemies in large numbers, then conquer and control the entire island.' 😑

And what exactly would the US do about it I wonder?

While it would be unfortunate, and I hope it doesn't happen, I'm not sure it really changes the strategic balance all that much, from a geographical standpoint.

I worry more about them getting their hands on US military tech, but they've probably already got the production, service manuals, and drawings for those anyway, thru internet theft, so…..

Good question….

We could fight on the side of the Taiwanese, of course.

What could/would the US do about it?

Well, we are on record as saying that Mainland will only invade Taiwan by going through the Seventh Fleet.

I talked to a family recently who were from the area located on the coast near Taiwan. We were talking about Space Camp or Sealable camp for their boys who are in the gifted program at the school.

Anyway, they said that the Chinese government offered summer camp programs. They were conducted by the military and local defense forces. They participated in obstacle courses and marching. I never got a good answer on shooting.
