Which country(modern or historic) has seen the highest incidence of major battles per square kilometres.
I nominate Belgium. 3 major battles during the WSS, several major battles during the WAS, oh and did I forget to mention Waterloo?
Then add all the medieval stuff. And the 80 and 30 years war.

Another candidate

Another possible candidate might be Saxony. Major battles during the 17th and 18th century and just for the hell of it Leipzig in 1813 the biggest battle in Europe (possibly the world) up to ww1.

I think you are right. We were debating Genghis Khan Mongolia and the rest of where he conquered . But you have the best answers! :)

Don't forget Ypres, Battle of the Bulge.

Ypres!

The first day of the battle of the Somme?

I concur with Belgium. Just the 20th century alone with the three battles of Ypres in WW1 and the Bulge in WW2 must account for a dense loss of life in such a small area.

Either Flanders (which would include Belgium, parts of the Netherlands and France) or the northern Italian plain. Both were very fertile and easy east/west access routes.

Depends how far back you want to go, but I reckon the 'cockpit of Europe' has it.

There were 9 battles fought around the town of Adrianople in European Turkey.

Belgium measures 30,528 square kilometers in size. In contrast is Vatican City. It measures .44 square kilometers in size and has, as part of Rome, been sacked 6 times: 387 BC, 410, 455, 476, 546, 1087, and 1527. That's 1 sack per .06 square kilometer. To match this Belgium would need 508,800 equivalent occurrences.

Now, it could be argued that these sacks were not as important as a major battle. But in terms of major military actions the sack of 410 saw the start of the fall of the Roman Empire, in 476 the last Emperor in the West was deposed, and the sack of 1527 is said to signal the end of the Italian Renaissance. Even considering just these events leaves Vatican City with one important military event for every .15 square kilometer.

And remember the criterion was in terms of "counties". Would that not rule out Adrianople?

I'd think someplace like Italy, which has had thousands of battles over the years would rank highly. From before the Romans through WWII.

I would have thought Saxony. Multiple battles around Lutzen, Bautzen and Leipzig.

In the US, it might be the area around Fredericksburg VA (couple of battles for the city, Chancellorsville, Wilderness, Spotsylvania Courthouse … skirmishes here and there) all within a couple of years. (We've been fairly battle free since the 1860s)

Although not battles, Winchester changed hands 74 times during the ACW if I recall correctly.
