There is a famous photo of U.S. Marines firing a machine gun in the Meuse-Argonne offensive in 1918. What weapon are they firing? It looks like a machine gun with one barrel above, and slightly separated from the lower one.

I think I know the one you mean, and if so, I recall it's a 37mm gun,

The photo is near the top. I had not seen the photo in Wikipedia, and it says a 37mm gun.

Yes, it is the French 37mm infantry gun.

This is a French 37mm cannon, designed in 1916 for use by infantry in the trenches.

Yes, it is. And even a good friend of mine who is a historian misidentified it in a program he gave last Wednesday.

Those aren't marines according to the caption. They are doughboys of the 23rd Infantry.
