I know next to nothing about this period, but I just watched this new movie about Robert the Bruce and enjoyed it. I have no idea how historically accurate it was. I will have to leave that for others to judge. There was enough blood spilled for a lifetime!

Much better than Braveheart

Made the mistake of starting last night. Surrendered to sleep and I am watching the rest of it today. Like Chris Pine as Robert. And I agree with Korvessa and Coopman. Well worth a watch. H

I thought it was really nicely done. Chris Pine did an excellent job as Robert. I hope that he continues to do period movies!

I really wanted to know more about John "The Black" Douglas. I really liked that character in the movie.

Chris Pine as Robert was great. Historically there is tons of stuff wrong. Edward I dies in 1307, not on the way to Bannockburn. The battle is mis-represented. Edward II is misrepresented.

It's grimy and gritty, but there are lots of little things that would have made it more accurate. Fun movie, but . . .

Watched it last night only to find I ended up on the cutting room floor :-)

@haywire

I think they changed the direction of the story, last year the focus was more on Bruce/Douglas.

I know that this was some director's take on things, but how did the men tell who was the enemy in a free for all melee like what is shown in the movie?

Korvessa10 Nov 2018 10:30 a.m. PST

I don't know too much about Robert – though I read a book once about ten years ago. Agree that Chris Pine was great.
Also very impressed by Elizabeth (didn't know much about her) – she is one tough cookie.

I am not too much of a "rivet counter" but do appreciate it when they make an effort (so "Battle of the Bulge" bad, SPR good – when it comes to tanks etc.)

So I thought costumes and weaponry was very good.
It seemed like they combined Loudoun Hill & Bannockburn – which didn't bother me.

Also loved subtle the spider web tribute. A close up without explaining it – you have to know the story to get the reference!

Watched it last night and thought it the best of its type to-date – which is all I could ask for. I understand the dramatic release had the director cut over 20 minutes from it's festival preview – so if there's ever a 'director's cut' … I'm in.

The movie does not include Bannockburn – the climax battle is Loudon Hill; so the time-lines are fine.

The only glaring inaccuracies I've picked are the placement of Prince Edward at Loudon Hill, the silly one-on-one bogus battlefield encounter and the Prince's hair-cut which is definitely mid-fifteenth century. Oh and whilst I accept casting can be problematic, Edward I looked less than 'Long-Shanks' to me.

Really liked it. Depiction of both forces was superb.

I just watched it this afternoon. Overall, I enjoyed it. It had an accurate feel and the battle scenes were I think realistically gory. I was surprised that it didn't include Bannockburn. Maybe there will be a Part II?

Doesn't the Prince's haircut fit Norman fashion?

coopman10 Nov 2018 7:51 p.m. PST

I don't anticipate a Part 2 because of how they summarized the remainder of the Scottish struggle for independence at the end.

I'm impressed the director didn't have the knights wearing mail hauberks at breakfast; but disappointed he felt it necessary to include the seemingly obligatory nocturnal fire-arrow assault.

Yes – the flaming arrows was a bit much. Who would want their arrows to be seen? The alert would go up the first flights that hit the deck. Mind you, the flaming jugs fired by War-wolf were also nonsense. There's a great experimental archeology documentary on War-wolf and a large stone ball is devastating against even a reinforced wall. A jug of anything isn't going to down a wall on Stirling I wouldn't have thought.

No the haircut is not particularly Norman if you are talking about 1066. Then it seems to have been shaved at the back almost to the crown which in any event is over two hundred years previous. I believe we only have manuscripts and the good old Bayeux tapestry for reference.

There's another Robin Hood movie coming up soon. A week away, albeit limited release. They must be timing it for the awards season.

Get ready. Gird your loins and limber up your typing fingers!

As noted, it's only been 10 years since "the last remake". I blame Game of Thrones.
