While it seems unlikely that vehicles as a whole are kept scrupulously clean in a combat zone (the crews having more important things to think about), what about windows? Logically it seems that a vehicle crew would want them to be clean so that they could see out of the windows. Is that the case?

Yes that is the case. In the summer the dust doesn't tend to stick too much and if it's rainy in the winter it comes off with the usual windscreen wipers. So either way you could paint the outline of where the wipers hadn't reached. That's assuming the glass hasn't been removed because it isn't blast proof.

Just a comment: My daughter drove MRAPs and MATVs in Afghanistan escorting convoys and we actually discussed this and OldGrenadier at Work you are correct. She said that they were constantly cleaning the 'glass' on their vehicles so they would have the best visibility possible. (It's funny to watch her when she puts gas in her pick-up now as she climbs all over the thing clean her windshields)

Old habits die very hard.
