Hello All,

I just wanted to ask people's opinions on the 40K 8th edition treatment of vehicles. They are in essence large "Monsters" with high armor and lots of wounds.

While I like it mechanically because the dice process is the same for Infantry or vehicles. I still find it weird/sad that my Lemon Russ tank can be whittled down by a storm of infantry fire.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks

On the table, it does not really feel like that. Those infantry weapons, even the big ones the Marines use, are hurting your tanks on a 6+ (after they roll to hit), and then you get a 2+ or 3+ save on top. With the number of wounds they have, they are doing nothing but scratching it.

And if they get the last shot that kills the tank… there are plenty of instances in the fiction of the marine sergeant nailing a shot through a vision slit, or lobbing a grenade down the exhaust…

Basically, the abstraction works just fine. You won't notice it.

Flamers working on flyers, however…

They flew into the flames, just like a moth.

I personally don't like it. It doesn't "feel" like how vehicles should work or operate in combat. I liked the old system of Str+D6 to determine a glance or a penetration, & a roll on the effects table, as well as different armor values depending on facing. The new system takes away some of the verisimilitude of the game (yes, I am aware this is a science fantasy game). I understand some people hated that, but it felt more "right" than the current system, which feels a lot more "gamey."

Damon.

GW fluff changes frequently and many of their designs are a bit over the top for me. Albeit I've been painting/collecting/gaming Epic since @ '89 …

I would like it if there was a chance to blow up or disable the vehicle each time it goes down a wound step.

I find it to be okay. Either you hit like a ton of bricks with the big antiarmour guns or its a death by a billion paper cuts.
My friends and I yell, bring it down! Bring it down!" whenever rolling strength 3 shots or attacks. Just adds to the fun.

Sorry for the multiple post. Site went nuts on me.

My 14 year old son and I like the new system. Vehicles had become really complicated in 7th and put us off playing. 8th is now no problem, much smoother, and we like the degradation tables for the bigger vehicles.

Remember this is a fantasy SCI FI set of rules. If you want greater "realism" then try an historical WWII or Modern era set of rules.

Now who wouldn't want the chance to kill a Baneblade with a gretchin blunderbuss..? ;-)

In my experiences we had Necron troopers tear apart a Dark Edlar Raider.

Similar results were down against a Eldar Fire Prism.

They were very effective in the amount of dice they were throwing.

Of course the Vehicles were rolling lots of 1s and 2s for saves.

I think the system in 8th Edition works just fine. Quick and easy.

It's been dumbed down for kids and people not into more complex systems. These games (miniature War games) used to seem the relm of intellectuals (generalising), now they (scifi and fant, even some historical) are being aimed at the drooling computer game players (drooling in the nicest possible way, of course). On the whole these rule changes are not surprising, but are disappointing.

Don't like 8th Edition. Vehicle rules are one reason. Another is my Hammerhead's Railgun and Lemon Russ tank's Battle Cannon just aren't as effective. No flanks, so a loss of tactics. And my lascannon teams are now largely useless. No, sir, will stick with 7th.
