How about some suggestions for flags to use with European expeditions in Darkest Africa UK navy? Other ideas? Let's say 1840-70 |

Just national flags makes sense. |

The old articles on the Foundry site mention that a lot of expeditions marched under the Zanzibar flag as they were marching through territory nominally claimed by Zanzibar. That is a plain red flag, no other embelishments. |

Here are some samples: link Just note that some of them are speculative. But for my Darkest Africa forces I use the red flag of Zanzibar as bsrlee suggests. Jim |

Bsrlee: "a lot of expeditions marched under the Zanzibar flag as they were marching through territory nominally claimed by Zanzibar" I'm sure that the mere sight of that Zanzibar red flag must have given a lot of interior natives the shivers and the runs. As already stated the Zanzabari flag is a simple red, others such as the Free State of Congo is a deep blue field with a central large yellow star. Stanley had a native bearer carry the American flag during his expedition to find Livingstone. The British South African had this variant on the Union Jack: link German East Africa had a proposed design which would have been a variant on the German Imperial Flag but I believe it was never officially adopted. Really I would say the troops carry the flag of the colonial power they represent if carrying a standard at all. Tribal units and Arabic/Tribal forces that were of a Islamic faith might carry a banner with Arabic script with a quote from the Quran. The link provided by ColCampbell is an excellent source. |
