"Say what you will about Darth Vader, but he knew how to run a modernization program. When he was put in charge of the Death Star Joint Program Office, that battle station reached initial operating capability on time – a feat the Pentagon seems unable to replicate many years later. The Defense Department could learn a lot from Vader. For example, is there any mention in the "Star Wars" trilogy of the second Death Star being over budget? Of course not. You best believe that the Sith bad-ass would have locked the prime contractor into a fixed-price contract that included a clause such as, "JPO reserves the right to force choke your CEO every time the software doesn't work as advertised."…." Because everyone today is too nice and politically correct. We need a few hard charging a-holes in the right place who know how to negotiate and get things done. |

The Obama Administration rejected an online petition to build a Death Star back in 2013 due to the following reasons: 1. The construction of the Death Star has been estimated to cost more than $850 USD quadrillion dollars. We're working hard to reduce the deficit, not expand it. 2. The Administration does not support blowing up planets. 3. Why would we spend countless taxpayer dollars on a Death Star with a fundamental flaw that can be exploited by a one-man starship? Even if the Trump Administration is more amenable to the idea, the feasibility of raising $850,000,000,000,000,000 USD to build one would be a pipe dream, even if we manage to cap it at that amount. We can probably halve the cost of building a Death Star if we outsource it to China, but that's highly unlikely in light of the deteriorating Sino-American relations under the current administration. And the Chinese will probably put a "back door," "kill switch" or other vulnerabilities that can be exploited if we ever go to war with China. |

Should be able to build the second one, which was incomplete. I agree with USAFpilot. I imagine people will be a lot more motivated to get things done on time, AND on budget, if they know they'll be strangled to death for noncompliance. Farming out a lot of work to people/countries that make very low wages should save us quadrillions. We now know about the fatal flaw, so should be able to fix that. The next administration might……. |

Better build one anyway and blow Mars to bits… Why do you think Hank Scorpio, I mean Elon Musk is so desperate to get to Mars? I'll tell you, it's got the ultimate evil genius hideout: the biggest hidden volcano base in the solar system, Olympus Mons. No kidfing, we beter keep an eye on that Hugo Drax wannabe… |

The interesting counterpoint is that during WWII the Pentagon could produce ships, planes, tanks, etc. like cars on an assembly line. Being a software PM I hate to say it but software is one of the main problems delivering systems on time. Once SW is working you don't have a lot of problems and you can always update it but getting to that point is often really hard. 30+ years in this business and I still learn new stuff and yet we seem to improve but go backwards every day. |

I suspect an accurate recreation of the death Star would be in the region of 5-10,000 taking into account to was only a few feet wide. It's outer surface did bankrupt one company though, so be careful. $5 USD-6 a square foot. Sounds cheap enough. |

the problem with the Death Star is we don't have anyone to use it on . enemies here on Earth are safe unless we want to blow ourselves up with them . and so far no other enemies have been found . |

Don't they need a planet nearby that has a force field they can use? So the Ewok planet was used for Death Star II, what planet was used for Death Star I? |
The H Man | 01 Nov 2018 4:35 p.m. PST |
None, as it was completed and could generate it's own force field, assuming it had one? It was, otherwise, able to defend itself, mostly. |

Say it with me now: "Single-reactor startup." (Yes, you do really need to watch Rogue One. It's a good movie that happens to be set in the Star Wars universe, and it's chronologically immediately before 1977s Star Wars A New Hope) |
The H Man | 02 Nov 2018 5:07 p.m. PST |
Only…Star Wars was not titled A New Hope in 1977. It was not renamed until 81. Common mistake. Although…With all the cgi, modernisation and what not in Rogue One, it could easily be a special edition exclusive prequel. |
