Howdy,

A Dark Age skirmish game was played on Saturday afternoon, October 27th at the Hobbytown in Frederick, Maryland. The game was a playtest for game to be played at Fall In in a couple of weeks.

The game used 15mm Essex miniatures painted by Evil Bob. The draft rules So Convenient for Hewing were used.

Situation: The Normans are building a motte and bailey near an important crossroads above the influence of a small creek and a river. The area has not been pacified, and the Fyrd raid the site in an attempt to destroy the ongoing construction before it is completed.

There were two Saxon forces in the game, each with a Senior Leader:

Force One)
1 unit 4 figures of Huscarls, veteran, armored and shielded.
1 unit 8 figures Warriors, with shield
1 unit 12 figures, green, no shields

Force Two)
1 unit 4 figures of Huscarls, veteran, armored and shielded.
1 unit 8 figures Warriors, with bow
1 unit 12 figures, green, no shields

The Normans, also had two forces, each with a Senior Leader:

Defenders:
1 unit 8 figures Warriors, armored and shielded
1 unit 8 figures Warriors, with shields
1 unit 8 figures Warriors, with Crossbows

Reinforcements:
1 unit 4 figures mounted Knights, armored and shielded
1 unit 8 figures mounted Warriors, shielded
1 unit 8 figures Warriors, armored and shielded

To win the Saxons must destroy the construction and inflict greater losses than received. While Normans must preserve the construction (avoid destruction) and inflict greater losses than received. Any other result is a draw. Now a few photos to show how the game went:

Photo 1 – Overall look at the table.

Photo 2 – Saxon Force One, Huscarls lead the way.

Photo 3 – Saxon Force Two

Photo 4 – Gallant Norman defenders – warriors, armored and shielded

Photo 5 – Saxons advance toward the motte & bailey site

Photo 6 – "I see you," crossbowman peek over a portion of the completed wall – "I shoot you, now"

Photo 7 – Saxons drive the defenders back, and get to work tearing down the bailey construction

Photo 8 – Norman reinforcements arrive, perhaps too late. The doughty Saxon archers hold the Normans at the Ford.

Good fun! The Saxon raid was successful they destroyed the in-progress construction, and inflicted significant loss on the Normans. 17 dead Normans, including 1 knight, and 5 dead Saxons. The game was played using the draft rules So Convenient for Hewing. Evil Bob did an excellent job painting the figures. The Fall-IN game is planned for Friday evening at 7pm. Hope to see you there.

Ponder on,

JAS

Can we see the rules, or are you planning on selling them?

I hope to publish after more playtesting.
