Indeed. But I think these "recountings," several of which have issues, absolutely must be viewed through the lens of 1794 on, as if the reader were also a soldier fighting enemies, both military and civilian, in the heat and danger of the moment, where the 18th-century rules of warfare, for example, have been obliterated.

If you read this article while sitting in 21st-century judgment, well, then, you definitely miss the point.

And yes, war is indeed hell. Deal with it.
