I recently finished a commission for some French Pontoneers, 28mm Perry Miniatures painted with a mix of my 'Warband' and 'Call to Arms' levels. Check out the blog for more: link Thanks!

The muted colours I love….. Poor devils at the Berezina would have looked far worse than this. White faces, filthy and blackened all over, many days growth of beard. Not much shirt sleeve order either. They would have not lasted 30 minutes ( actually I wonder how many did. It was quite nippy that day) I just envy your rendering of the blue, with what seems a greyer highlight. It is something I have tried but not yet mastered. I have seen Retreat figures (that have won prizes) in lurid colours that one would expect from the top of a Christmas cake. Toned down like this, I love. Many prefer the vibrant use of colour, which takes the same degree of skill, however. Not me, I go for realism. I have not seen these Perry figures this well shown (even on their own website) |

Thanks for the comments guys, glad you like them. I agree with them looking much dirtier…my heart goes out to those brave guys. Yes, I wanted to capture a more dirty, worn/sun bleached look, and so went for a darker blue. I painted a dark grey-blue as a base shade, then as a highlight added a little less black to the mix. It's subtle, but is more realistic I think. |

The chap on the colpack would make a superb guard horse artillery officer! (Completely missing in Perry's range) |

Very good suggestion. I created a small command group from Brigade Games Miniatures Chasseur officers and trumpeter, but would love to have done mounted gunners. The musket put me off though. This figure. He is an ADC, so lose that left arm….brassard is it? The plume must come off the colpack and go to his left side. Ah, the snag then is that the flamme, the coloured bag, is on that side, not his right. Same goes for the flounders and other cap decorations, wrong side for Guard Officers. Very minor details though. Who would notice? |
