I haven't been on TMP as much as usual over the last few months, so I have only just noticed that Dibble TMP link got his account locked. What happened there? He was a very knowledgeable poster.

Don't know but you will find him active over at Armchair General website link

Thanks both.

Since he hasn't posted for months, I was presuming that "chatting with Gwen" didn't go well, or didn't happen.

Anyway, despite our occasional disagreements, I thought he was a very well-informed poster and it is a pity that he, along with many others, aren't around any more.

Which bit of OFM was Paul then? Did I miss his exclusion? Who will rabidly support the British now?

Personal logo deadhead Supporting Member of TMP23 Oct 2018 3:38 a.m. PST

Well John the OFM (from the Wild West of Ireland actually) is still lauded as the model Supporting Member on this page of TMP (well he is as I type this anyway).

John and Kevin are both happily playing Napoleon pingpong over on Armchair General. Reminds me of an old collie dog I once knew. This stuff never gets old!

Cacique Caribe23 Oct 2018 4:35 a.m. PST

Hmm. Dibble?

Did I miss his exclusion?

Must have done, like me.

Who will rabidly support the British now?

I dunno. Still, since he posted stuff that was much more reliable than the rabid Napoleon supporters, it seems a pity he isn't around.

Good to know!

Hmm. Dibble?

He posted a lot on the Napoleonic forums. He was, as Mark was saying, very pro-British but he did know a lot about them.

von Winterfeldt23 Oct 2018 6:20 a.m. PST

a pity to see him gone – very helpful ind full of knowledge.

Garde de Paris23 Oct 2018 7:22 a.m. PST

I had no idea he is gone! He was always a BIG help to me in developing specific regiment distinctions for the British in the Peninsular War, always helpful with lots of illustrations.

I must see about the armchair General site.

I just signed up over there as well.

Looks like he never responded to Editor Gwen's email. I've unlocked his account.

I guess it's the "clash of egos" – people get on each other's nerves, they start misbehaving on the forums, then someone ends up leaving or being asked to leave for not obeying forum rules…

Marc at work23 Oct 2018 9:35 a.m. PST

Sign o' the times I guess. I spend more time on FB now as the groups I follow are more focused for my interests. TMP is fun for a visit, but no longer my go to. I think the world is moving on.

Marc at work23 Oct 2018 9:36 a.m. PST

And the nice thing on FB is, if I don't like a post, I know another 100 will be along to swamp it soon

The reverse is true – FB is now seen as where grandparents hang out. Younger generation is going elsewhere. Lots of people worried about security issues, and have trust issues regarding FB corporate.

And lots of gamers aren't on FB.

I don't like facebook

But then I'm not one of the kool kids

Look again. I haven't answered him in either of his postings because that is a futile exercise as the flurry of insults and inaccuracies just gets old.

So, if there's a 'ping pong' match, it is being held by one person only.

My sons aged 23 will have nothing to do with Facebook. It was sold for a fortune just as it became passé with their generation.

The weirdest folk want to be my friends. Folk on TMP are models of sanity by comparison. Internet does make people act strangely and say odd things.

Hello again to you all!

First of all I would like to thank Whirlwind (I can assure you all that it wasn't off-site collusion) for bringing me up in a main topic and also Bill for unlocking my account.

As far as I was concerned I was banned for good. The reason for this thinking is because I was given no 'dawghouse' just blocked completely from the site without explanation ('about' three others were also banned), including an historian who refused to give his real name, and might I say, all had contrary views to the Napoleon admirers.

I proceeded to check into my account where I was directed to e-mail Gwen. I e-mailed twice over the next few weeks with no reply. so after 3 months I assumed that I was banned for good with no appeal so left it at that and seeing as my ban was one of others (mentioned above) to be banned at the same time for our views, thought it may even be an agenda of the site in general.

I was still able to view the very interesting postings of you good people by surfing anonymously but I never attempted to make a bogus account to rejoin the forum or contact any posters involved on this site.

I will not go into much more than to say that a rabid dog is out of control. I post only what I know, usually with pictorial and more decisive, full quote original(not out of context sound-bites) evidence. But my first priority on this site was in helping people with problems of uniforms and other data which gave me pleasure to know that others went away with what they were looking for (The great GdP was and still is it seems, especially appreciative)

I know that to some I am seen as 'insultive' but I have only really replied in kind. I don't report anyone and never put them on ignore, no matter who, whether it's Kevin or John (Gazolla), for example with who I am 99% at loggerheads with. I for one will always respect their views and enjoy reading their posts, but then again, always rebut them when need be as forcefully as they do mine.

And may I say, I hope you are all keeping well and safe and enjoying the little wars as much as you have always done.

Paul :)

While I have the chance, Paul. I have always wanted to know; is your handle cartoon-related? Y'know

Thanks Raul. I'm glad to be able to post here again though I'll try and see if I can be a little less hard when it comes to knocking the pegs out of the guy ropes of Nappy's campaign tent.

Well, to answer you question Jf', I went to a boarding school west of Windsor for a year at the age of 12. After only about a day I was ragged about the rather prominent dimple (Kirk Douglas like) in my chin, asking me what the 'dent' was, I replied that it was a dimple and a senior boy 'miss heard' and said "Dibble?" I repeated what I had said but the senior boy stuck with it and pointed out the connotations with Top Cat's Officer Dibble and from then on I was Dibble, even to to the masters. I was listed in the football team and other non-official listings as Dibble, and I was addressed as Dibble when the register was taken. I can honestly say that not once after about a week or so, did I ever hear my name 'Paul' mentioned again at the school. My school-mates there called me 'Dibble' and in fact, I liked the nick-name.

What I didn't like was being away from home and constantly badgered my parents to get me 'out'. It wasn't the school, as that and all the people in it were fine, it was just that I wasn't cut out to be away from home as a child.

Suffice to say that outside of that school, it was back to plain old Paul.

:)

Welcome back dibble, you have been missed.

Thanks for sharing, Paul. I can almost smell the floorpolish and cabbage.

Dibble, your story was great.

We many went through what was seen as the best education for its time, with all its faults. OK, most of us did not experience what has since destroyed all faith in the establishment. But still knew there was something desperately wrong with the whole system even then.

I have no idea what all the fuss was about re your exclusion, but, if you are prepared to make any contribution to this forum, God bless you.

You can abuse me all you like (just verbally, I stress, on the Internet) and I have the choice to ignore you or respond. Please continue to input…

We need opinions, right or wrong. OK, leave out religion, racism, LGBTetc, politics, but if you think someone simply has not got a clue, that is not unacceptable, even if you do not present any evidence. That is for them to respond.

I wish I could welcome others back

Thanks for your warm words dh' I'll try to be gentle with ya'. Mind you! I have in general, been OK with the vast majority of you members as far as I'm concerned, some may think otherwise, but just like with life in general, not all people see eye-to-eye and everyone has a nemesis or two.

Be assured that I do intend to contribute more information to the site in the future but what that information may be, is mainly up you fine members who contribute good topics for discussion and enquiry.

As for the smell of a boarding school, you are right in a way Jf', it is a strange smell but it was a smell that I had first experienced at 7 years of age when visiting one of my older brothers who also went to a (different) boarding school. I went with my parents to see him on one of their sports days and remember being shown into the main hall of this rather grand, huge building and being hit by that very same odour. I remember it assailing my senses when I did again likewise 5 years later on entering my school's hall. The other curious thing about the smell was that the odour 'disappears from your senses in no time, and even when you went back after each term, you couldn't 'smell the smell'…Very strange indeed! And just to say, that the smell (to me) was neither pleasant or unpleasant.

Paul :)
