…Cycle Lane. "The 15 ton amphibious eight-wheeled military vehicle barely slowed as it crushed the luxury car. In a video released by the mayor's office, a man (assumed to be the owner) approaches the car after the mayor has crushed it. On July 30, 2011, the mayor of Vilnius, Lithuania, drove a Russian BTR-80 armored troop carrier over a Mercedes Benz to illustrate that his office would crack down on people parking illegally in bicycle lanes…."

It appears that the old Soviet republics are still having some issues with applying the rule of law. |

I haven't seen this, and do find it amusing. I suspect the owner of the Mercedes less so. |

I wonder if that's covered by insurance…I can see the Farmers spokesman stuttering. |

Bravo! When I drive my car, I don't park in the bike lane. I follow the traffic and parking rules, and expect everyone else to do the same. When I ride my bike, and I'm not in a hurry, I take pictures of cars parked in the bike lane and send them to the Department of Parking and Traffic (DPT, also known as "Don't Park There"). I don't know if DPT does anything about it -- certainly not enough to deter anyone. Driving down a randomly selected bike lane in an armored vehicle once a week or so would probably have a pretty good deterrent effect. I'm sending the linked article to the mayor of San Francisco as a modest proposal for keeping the streets safe for bicyclists. |

According to California's Department of Motor Vehicle's website, it states, "You may park in a bicycle lane if your vehicle does not block a bicyclist and/or there is not a "No Parking" sign posted." The problem with this is what constitutes blocking a bicyclist? |

@williamb: I'll ask the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, and find out what they're doing about that rule. |
