Gentlemen, Like most wargamers I have always been enchanted by grand projects. However, as I've gotten older it has become increasingly clear to me that time is limited and my reach will forever exceed my grasp. Many conflicts are simply too big for me to do any justice to at my normal painting speed (roughly 45 minutes per 15mm figure). So, I have come to the conclusion that I should try to focus on smaller wars, or at least wars with smaller battles. A few come to mind: The Mexican-American war, The Jacobite Rebellion (though it seems terribly one-sided for wargaming). Anyone have any other suggestions for wars or campaigns with relatively few troops on either side? Say under 10,000 per side. |

War of 1812 and AWI. But, really, the size of the biggest battle should not be a determinant. You can alter your troop ratio to accommodate larger battles. Even without that, an inability to put on Waterloo shouldn't keep you from enjoying Vimerio or Maida. |

HB; I am came to the same conclusion as you about five years ago. Since then I have focused my efforts on the War of 1812. Divisional level or less battles is ideal for those using the 20:1 ratio for figures. My plan is research, collect figures, paint figures and game all of the major battles. |

I have had a lot of fun with John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry, about 75 figures involved, I recently did the battle of Tippacanoe. |

The wars of the American Frontier Riel Rebellion (biggest battle had less than 1500 on both sides) |

English Civil War, maybe? It would be a stretch to do Edgehill or Marston Moor, but there are lots of smaller fights and regional operations. The '45 would be a good choice-- Prestonpans shows that the highlanders have an equal chance under the right circumstances. It should make an interesting campaign. |

Thanks for the recommendations gents. I'm not opposed to little battles, the problem I have is that I'm weak. It is just so easy to think 'you know, if I only add four more battalions I could do the battle of such-and-such as well'. Then before you know it I've ordered enough lead re-fight Leipzig 1:1 scale. The AWI, French and Indian War, and 1812 all have appeal. I imagine I could get away with the same natives for all three and there would be a good deal of overlap, at least with militia for the first two. Wait…did I just wildly expand my project again? This might be better asked on the 18th Century board, but has anyone had success making Jacobite wargames interesting tactically for both sides? Seems to me it is an either or situation. Hanoverians panic: Jacobites win. Hanoverians stay calm: Jacobites lose. Feels like that would just boil down o a charge reaction check. Are there rules that make it more interesting? I always felt like Black Powder gave a bit of an edge to cold steel, but I haven't read those rules in years. I don't think Jacobites stand much chance in Age of Reason. |
