How come this took so long to happen? Not criticising, just interested. |

Saw that on the news yesterday … Very glad to see it. But yes, it took much, much too long. Don't know why it took so long, but like many things about that war … everything was a Cluster , as I told by those who fought it … |

@uglyfatbloke: Well, first problem is actually the MoH itself. The requirements for it are very simple, a total of 5 words: "There can be no question" (that any lesser award adequately recognizes the badassery involved). So there's an investigation. A big one. 10-12 years for stuff that happened just recently. The second problem is that it's the Congressional Medal of Honor. Yeah, the President gets to present it, but Congress has to approve it. So there's a lot of politics involved. I know there were MoHs awarded during Vietnam, but almost all of them were for diving on a grenade or otherwise killing yourself to save your brothers. That's an easy 'sell', even to a Congress that is highly anti-war. It's a much harder sell for a living person. |

So there's a lot of politics involved. And there is the rub … |

No problem! I was a yeoman in the Navy, so I wrote a lot of awards for people. |

Forgive a UK input…and I may have this wrong…but I recall it is actually called "The Medal of Honor of Congress" but "Congressional Medal of Honor" a far better sound to it (even if Honour is spelt wrongly) Seriously though, for this chap's bravery to be recognised only this late in the day….must be some kind of record surely.

The bureaucracy in any gov't organization is massive. And things get lost all the time … E.g. I left Korean in '85 … I was sent my Korean Service Defense Metal in like 2015 … |
