"China has issued a chilling warning to Australia after it emerged that the Morrison government would be increasing its naval cooperation with the US in the South China Sea.

An editorial published in the China Daily, the state media outlet, said that Australia was walking a ‘tightrope' between the US and China.

It warned of a ‘Cold War' if the government aligned too closely with the US…."

Fortunately, speaking as an Australian, I can promise you we dont scare easy. And there are still quite a lot of Australians who remember that China is a Communist nation with a 1 Party, non-democratic Totalitarian Government.

We are happy to work positively with China economically. We are happy to help educate many thousands of Chinese young people in our Schools and Universities and we welcome and celebrate the culture and diversity of our ethnic Chinese citizens. They have chosen to emigrate to Australia and live in a free, open society where they can express their opinions openly and enjoy the right to vote.

Simply because European explorers wrote the name South China Sea on their maps does not, in our view, make the area the exclusive domain of Communist China. The International Courts established that some time ago.

Australia has lived through a Cold War before, if we have to again then so be it. Some principles need to be defended from bullies.

Three more escalation levels remain: "Crikey!", "I think we'll need to cancel the barbie this weekend" and "The barbie is cancelled." It should be noted that there has not been a situation yet that has warranted the use of the final escalation level.

If China invaded the local fauna alone would end them.

Not to mention the flora. Australia, I have been told, has three kinds of native plants – spikey, poisonous, and spikey and poisonous.

^ I was thinking the same – not a good idea to invade any country where the natives (all of them) will try to kill you!

Yup. WW1 and WW2 did not cancel the barbie on the weekend. WW1 was only to the level of 'Crikey!'; WW2 did, however, rise to the level of 'I think…', just to put things in perspective.

China's force projection capability is wonky at best. Some claim that trying to invade Taiwan would probably be troublesome and anything remotely distant more of a utopia.

That's boots on the ground, they do have a significant air capacity and could bomb Australia, though nuclear weapons remain China's main military deterrent.

I wouldn't expect Chinese troops to set foot on Australian beaches other than some special forces and maybe a big show of force, but in a shooting war they might find that moving troops across an ocean is no mean feat.

Actually, with the new SCS bases, their missiles can reach Northern Australia today, and they're working on all of Australia soon, with upgrades.

Plus, from what I've read, there's also a real press for them to secure naval and air bases on various other islands in the Pacific, South Pacific, and Indian Oceans, among other places, so……. there should be a certain level of concern at some point in the future, especially given their treatment of other neighbors externally, or absorbed internally, not to mention their communist ideology and leadership.
