Even as I employ and like large bases for my Spaniards and Carthaginians in the 28mm Punic army I am building, I am looking over my shoulder at the Macedonians I based ages ago for WRG. Those Pike phalanxes would look so fine based in the newer 'dioramic' style. (My Punic 'hoplite' spearmen are based 12 to 14 figures to a 120mm by 40mm base, the Spaniards at 9 to 12 figures to a 120mm x 60mm base) I am deliberating how hefty a base I want to have though, as the full 120mm wide stand might have as many as 32 pikemen. For now, my intentions for pike are to cut the base width in half, and mount four figures wide, and three figures deep on a 60mm wide by 80mm deep base. I can always double up the depth if I need a deeper dsplayofpikemen. How does everyone else handle a base with over 30 heavy lead figures? And how do you base your phalanxes/pikemen? Great to have pretty bases and figures, but I want to be able to maneuver them safely, and be able to peer in and actually see the figures I spent so much time painting! |
