Can anyone recommend some good books on the Baltic Crusades? Years ago I read Eric Christiansen's, "Northern Crusades," and William Urban's, "The Baltic Crusade," but I'm hoping to find something newer, reflecting advances in recent scholarship. Especially interested in anything that would focus on the military aspects of the different Crusades (Prussian, Livonian, etc). I want some inspiration as I dust off my 40 year old Mikes Models armies for the Teutonic Knights, Novgorodian Rus, Wends, Prus and others. Many thanks.

There is the "History of the Crusades" podcast.

It's a good few decades old, but the Society of Ancients' "Wargaming the Baltic Crusades" booklet by Paul Stein is still available – soa.org.uk/joomla/publications

I'll second the Society of Ancients book, it was inexpensive and loaded with information.

Duncan, Nick, you're right, that old booklet is a great resource. I bought a copy when it first came out. Any opinions on William Urban's, "The Teutonic Knights: A Military History?"
Nick, thanks for the podcast recommendation.

For general history, the Northern Crusades by Eric Christiansen is good:

The Later Crusades by Housely, though not confined to the Bsltic, is also worth reading.

The Teutonic Knights by Urban is good, but necessarily a bird's eye view covering over 350 years in a pretty slim book.

Not mentioned yet is Livonia, Rus' and the Baltic Crusades in the thirteenth century by Anti Selart. More on the politics and diplomacy than on the details on the fighting, but good for not just focusing on the most famous episodes and putting it all into a larger European context.
