Is there any authority for flags (or the lack of flags) for the French Colonial units serving in America? Like Regiment Port-Au-Prince etc?

There is a source that has that info. It's in French. I don't have a copy unfortunately. It would be neat if someone with access to the book and a working knowledge of French could make a list of all the colonial flags colors.

I asked a similar question 5+ years ago on this forum and some nice person replied with the info for the Il d France regiment.

Hmm, very, very interesting. Maybe someone has the link to the thread?

I believe the book is "Drapeaux et Etendards du Roi" by Pierre Charrie. Unfortunately the information on colonial regimental Flags is a little sparse. The Infanterie de Marine et des Colonies covers less than half of page 104, and concludes with the rather depressing phrase "Les Drapeaux des autres regiments des colonies: Port-au-Prince, Guadeloupe, Port-Louis, Isle Bourbon, Pondicherry sont inconnus a ce jour."

Nevertheless, he does provide details for the following regiments, in addition to the various corps of the Royal infanterie de Marine:

des Etrangers de Dunkerque 1760-63;
Legion de l'Isle de France et de Bourbon 1766-1772;
Regiment du Cap 1772-1775;
Regiment de l'Isle de France 1772-1775;
Regiment de la Martinique 1772-1775.

Indeed a dark corner for researchers. And of course any snippets are useful for those gaming the Indies as well as the Americas.

So, what are the details?
That's what the OP asked. I'd like to know myself. Savannah is on my to-do list.

Actually Winston that is not what the original poster asked for. He asked if there was any authority for the flags of French Colonial Units. I have identified one, including which regiments it covers. . He then asks about colonial units serving in America, like the Regiment Port au Prince, etc I have indicated that Charrie's book states that the flags of the regiment Port au Prince are unknown at present. Unfortunately I do not know what other regiments were serving in America, so cannot answer that. As for Savannah, I have also no idea which French Units fought there, so cannot be of help. Sorry!

Been trying to get this book "Drapeaux et Etendards du Roi" by Pierre Charrie for a decent price for a while now and have come up empty. Can somone provide a scan or description of the Flags mentioned by mollinary above?

Royal infanterie de Marine:

des Etrangers de Dunkerque 1760-63;
Legion de l'Isle de France et de Bourbon 1766-1772;
Regiment du Cap 1772-1775;
Regiment de l'Isle de France 1772-1775;
Regiment de la Martinique 1772-1775.

Try abebooks.com. They have a few for sale, most of them at a reasonable price.

Pengel and Hurt books might be helpful. They too are available from Abebooks.
I wouldn't know which one to recommend, but they're probably not in the Madison du Roi. grin

But the Pengel and Hurt books would be too early for AWI. It seems the flags did change over time. I am not even sure that many of the Caribbean militias were established until after the SYW and certainly were at a minimum newly raised shortly before the AWI.

They do look like good books in their own right.

Can somone provide a scan or description of the Flags mentioned by mollinary above?

If you would like scans of those colors, my email is Boulart198@yahoo.com. I'd be happy to scan them and email them to you.
