Long Island.
He almost got his army wiped out were it not for the heroics and skill of Glover's Marbleheaders.
But he survived that.

I agree with Long Island. Yet all those blurbs from
Revolution experts did not once mention that Washington was not happy about having to defend NYC. He only did so because Congress told him to.

Well, allowing Howe to catch him with the same manoeuvre at Brandywine Creek, must have smarted, although he was let down by careless subordinates on the open flank.

Yeah, definitely Brandywine. Rebel recon was terrible--the British marched around their flank and almost caught them on the hop.
