There were two sieges of Saragossa, the first one failed and then Lannes was assigned the mission and took Saragossa.

Von Brandt's memoir, In the Legions of Napoleon, covers the siege quite well.

As it happens, I have just finished rereading War To the Death by Raymond Rudorff (Pub 1974), which I should not have been doing since I have so many newer titles yet to read. But I only skimmed through it the first time so, for some reason (perhaps inspired by our enforced lockdown?) I wanted to have another go. At times it was very much like reading the horrific actions that took place in WW1, with all the artillery bombardments, tunneling and mines exploding. There was also lots of hand to hand fighting as well, from room to room, usually involving civilians (men and women) fighting and dying alongside regular troops. People were buried under rubble where they stood as mines exploded under their feet. The defenders and the besiegers were both very determined and certainly courageous but it must have been hell for all of them?
Anyway, I will now have to add In the Legions of Napoleon to my yet-to-buy book list, which, like my yet-to-read pile, never seems to get any smaller! LOL

Zaragoza was hell without doubt my good friend…
