I've been painting some French Marines from Old Glory's Boxer Rebellion line to use as French Foreign Legion in battles of the Tonkin campaigns of 1883-87. The only modification I made was to cut and scrape off the anchor from the front of the Marine's sun helmet. I have a nice sized Boxer Rebellion collection that includes French Marines and plenty of Boxers that will double as Tonkin rebels and southern Chinese, reducing the effort necessary to put together this little side trip into Tonkin. Four out of the planned five 12-figure units (for TMWWBK) are finished. Pics of my modest efforts are at this link:

Excellent

Thanks for the kind comments.
Rallynow, I'm planning on using ‘The Men Who Would Be King' for some games and a derivative of ‘The Sword and the Flame' for others. Kinda depends on the mood we're in when we play.

Ragbones, these look great! I'm currently collecting for the same project. I'm even painting up some figs for Marco56. How about some pics of your Chinese? Will you paint or convert any of the Boxer figs to more directly resemble the various Chinese and Vietnamese forces involved?
Cheers,
JB

Here's a link to some pics of some of my Boxers:

They're a mix of Old Glory, Foundry, Redoubt, Pulp (Bob Murch) and a few Eureka (I think; it's been a long time).

If you need more pics let me know. All the flags I made by hand. The Chinese script is as authentic as my poor painting skills allowed, being copied directly from Chinese characters kindly provided to me by some former colleagues in the DoD.

With retirement and increasing age I have no interest in figure conversion unless it's as easy as scraping the anchor emblem off a helmet like on the French figures. wink I've painted a few Boxers in darker colors, experimenting with the possibility of passing off some as Black Flag troops. I'll try to take and post a few pics a little later.
Foundry makes a nice Chinese infantryman in turban that's ideal for some of the southern Chinese forces but there's no variety offered in poses. Doesn't bother me too much as this is only a sideline interest for me whereas my partner in crime who got me involved in Tonkin is looking at full blown figure conversion.

Some pics of the figures on which I messed around with different looks. I didn't want the black clad figures to be too dark and I found a look I like.

Ragbones, I think you did a great job on both the troops and the flags! I look forward to seeing what else you're going to paint up.

I just played in a Boxer game this past weekend in Orlando FL at Hurricon-2018 an HMGS-South con. Some pics of the Boxer game should be in here.

SgtGuiness, thanks for that link. There are some beautiful games there! Any of them yours? I follow your blog regularly. You sir, are a Master.

SgtGuinness13 Nov 2018 1:00 p.m. PST

Ragbones, Very high praise indeed sir, thank you! I'm really happy that you enjoy my blog. I wish I had more to to post AAR's, game pics, and WIP's.

Only one of the games from the Hurricon file is mine this time. The one with the Arabic looking coastal city, gunboats and steam launches with French & German Marines, and dhows.

Cheers,
JB
