So, seriously, if it becomes a permanent reality in the next 15-20 years … what sort of uniforms can we hope to see, so that we can start converting and painting figures for it? So, IF you wanted to already start preparing your own miniature stand-ins: 1) On the subject of DESIGN, would your figures wear jumpsuits like the crew (or the M.A.C.O. troops) on the ST Enterprise series? Or perhaps like the fellas on Space: Above And Beyond? Or some other design? 2) And what COLOR SCHEMES would you use for them? Dan These are the STE M.A.C.O. jumpsuits:

I'm planning on using Mantics GCPS Rangers (jump pack and enclosed helmet) as UN Space Force Marines. I'm thinking of using the Star Saga corporate security personal (caps & smgs) as UN Navy. Seems like they would fit quite well as near future US as well. If you want some inspiration try watching some cut scenes and gameplay from Call of Duty infinite Warfare. UN had navy, coast guard (guarding the moon space port), marines and scars (special forces operating as pilots and assault troops). I'd suggest using the UN troops as inspiration as the UN in the game was very much US with multinational badges and accents added. YouTube link |

I was talking about the US Space Force, but you mean a multinational one, perhaps something like what we see in Independence Day Resurgence and a few other recent films?
That might introduce some different uniform design elements. Dan

Dan, Are you looking for "work fatigue-style" uniforms, combat uniforms, or dress uniforms? Because each of the above will be different. Dave |
Cacique Caribe | 30 Sep 2018 4:53 p.m. PST |
LOL. You are probably right. That would be a fiction that would not transfer over to reality in our lifetimes. It could delay launches for decades, while the diplomats battle over the question of what fabric to use on what. By the way, these jackets on the American base look more recognizable:
Dan PS. Dave, I'm looking at what would be the day to day uniforms on a base or station in space, for officers, crew and security personnel. Something in the realm of the possible. Not any retro shiny metallic uniforms or purple wigs though. :) |

How bout poop brown flight suits with flashing LED insignia? |

Wow. We finally get back to warfare in which camouflage is completely irrelevant, and all the uniform suggestions are dull greens, olives and just a bit of horizon blue? Classic Trek, people. Classic Trek. In an absolute emergency, classic Galactica, which is a little more forgiving for those of us who gain weight along with rank. And do note that classic Trek uses US Navy rank insignia along with ranks and commands like "general quarters" from which the Royal Navy has somehow strayed. |

A UN space force would be useless for the foreseeable future. There is no alien for us to fight as a common enemy. The USA wants a Space Force to be able to fight human enemies from Earth in space. The vast majority of the world has no ability to go to space and only a few who can go to space would be allies with the USA. Even NATO would have little to offer. Perhaps select nations, UK, France, Japan, maybe Canada, and Australia might be helpful, but under US command and direction. I think the uniform for daily use would be very similar to the dress shoes, trousers, short sleeve shirt, shoulder tabs of the other services, since most of their work will be done here in the USA on the ground. The US Army, Marines, Navy, and Air Force all have at least one blue uniform, so I am thinking Space Force will wear blue. As for a utility uniform for painting rocks, probably some baggy uniform not unlike the Army or Marines wear, and I would guess in a solid color, rather than camouflage, maybe a dark sky blue, maybe a blue / green, just to be different. But they may need a uniform for tactical use in the field. Air Force guys used to wear a solid green uniform when they were doing air to ground communications with US Army troops. There may be a need to wear something like that when doing space to ground communications. The real fun comes in 10/ 20/ 30/ years when they have hypersonic space transportation and can send 100 guys anywhere in the world from Arizona in less than an hour. Then the Space Force may want to deploy their own Space Quick Reaction Force guys. Mike Bunkermeister Creek Bunker Talk blog |

Nah, none of that. Overall black, with little white specks all over. Blends into space, and also makes dust and dandruff less of an issue. A UN anything is useless ALL the time. |

Most of the Space Command personnel that I knew (my last duty station was colocated with a USAF Space Command installation) wore flight suits, in either the "sage green" or dark blue. I guess that they were phased out a few years ago, though. link My bet would be that the Space Force uniform would be similar to some of the the USAF uniforms, with slight variations in trim and adornments – like the US Coast Guard uniform is very similar to the US Navy uniform.
The duty uniform would have to be suited for working at a computer desk/console – the loose fitting "flight suit" design would seem to be simple and efficient for that. Dress uniform could be anything – depending on how much money they want to waste… err. spend in order to have something unique. |

US Space Force: Let's snazz things up with all black with gold trim/piping, as a jumpsuit or combo of black pants, grey shirt, black jacket. For summer wear, take into a lighter grey with black piping and gold accents. All piping is minimal, highlighting shoulder areas, possibly collars. We want a nice clean look that says "Space Force" with confidence, but without screaming it. Patches use a silver starburst insignia, with minimal colors to designate internal divisions, departments or duties. Logo is a space sunrise over Earth, featuring North America as the primary continent, with a waving Stars and Stripes ghosted in the background of space. This is the US Space Force, after all. As for the U.N., all white seems appropriate. They can wear it until they get into a hostile situation, in which case they can take it off and wave it to surrender. |

Parzival, you're close. Over the long haul, we want a black uniform with silver trim, and the gray reserved for Unattached lensmen. Let's all sing "Our Patrol" and get on with our duties. Clear ether! |

At the present, chances are 99+% that Space Force will end up using the ground forces ranks. Probably Air Force, since AFSpace is the largest space command. RAF ranks would be funny. Day-to-day uniform is probably going to be flight suits for the 'flight crew' (the actual satellite operators) and camouflage for the ground support. Because nobody is Space Force is actually going into space. Formal uniform is probably going to be USAF-style with a few differences (like how Coast Guard formal uniform is very similar to Navy). I don't see a naval-style rank structure happening until Space Force has 20+ people die and loses an entire spaceship because of a crew problem that sailors have had solved for a thousand years. Hopefully we don't take 200 years to get ships that big. |

I like Classic Star Trek for the basic shipboard duty uniform, with maybe a broader color range to make identification of personnel by job quicker. For example, only security and ship's troops should wear red, and other ship services should wear another color. Only medical staff should wear blue, and other science staff should wear another color. Only command staff should wear yellow -- and I guess no one else wore yellow anyway. Swap the patent leather boots for Sperry Topsiders to minimize scuff marks on the decks -- and why would you need boots on a spaceship, anyway? There's no sloshing water to make your pants wet. Keep the short, tight, dresses for female personnel, definitely. link link |
