"Children in a province north of Cairo may face the new school year without familiar Disney characters to cheer them up, it's reported. The governor of Qalyubia has decreed that cartoon images of Mickey Mouse and his friends on the walls of pre-schools must be replaced by "military heroes", the Youm7 news site reports. "We need to replace pictures of Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck with images of famous Egyptians and military martyrs, so that children will look up to them as role models. These characters are US-made, whereas we have our own noble figures who can deepen children's patriotism and love of country," Alaa Abdul-Halim Mohammed Marzouk told reporters…." Main page link Question: What type of society bans Mickey Mouse? Amicalement Armand |

I'm confused. Is it really a ban or just calling for a replacement of cartoony figures to allow for more visibility of images of their country's heroes? A ban would mean immediate punishment and/or fines for simply showing the MM image. Does that particular governor have a childhood phobia of mice? Or is it just talking mice? :) Dan |

Mickey Mouse has been stripped from daycare centres in North America for years as the House of Mouse has been vigilant in protecting its IP -I didn't know that Egyptians could still use the Mouse with impunity! |

New Mickey Mouse cartoons are still in production right now: link And this particular series is sumptuous, entertaining and much better than the dreck aimed at toddlers. |

Flashman: "much better than the dreck aimed at toddlers" Surely you don't mean the old MM reruns that I watched in the 60s and 70s and that helped make me the person I am today! Dan |

I suspect it is also because "Mickey and Minnie" were teaching pre-school children how to grow up to be martyrs, and to kill all infidels with suicide vests and other means. I think they had different, Arabic names, but the likenesses to the beloved, peace-loving, Disney characters were uncanny. |

This is a board for "the discussion of books, films, music and other media involving modern warfare and geopolitics, including fiction and non-fiction." Fairly certain the original post does not meet those broad requirements. |

Thresher But in the long run it does come down to IP as well … I got some friends who are lawyers.
