Is there a good resource for the effectiveness of various ap shells vs different armor thicknesses for ww1 gun types. I have a book on naval weapons by Friedman which has some ranges at the start but it's for a 1918 British shell. Also I'm seeing conflicting ideas about gunnery ranges, anywhere from 10,000 to 16,000 yards. I have quite a few books on the period, by the aforementioned author and Burt but the information is pretty scattered.

Thanks

Try this post from 23rd August – a lot of info regarding ranges from a bunch of guys.

Cool thanks – I see also that Friedman's book has a bunch of numbers scattered in paragraphs from earlier tests but, takes a bit of reading to sift through it all.

You can try Nathan Okun's Navweapons website -

Haven't looked through everything there, but he has put a lot of time and effort into the data and formulas there. Should be able to find what you need.

When I was writing my pre-dread rules I used the Navweapons site that goragrad just provided the link for, as well as the tables in Brassey´s naval annual. The 1923 Brassey´s might have what you are looking for.

You can take a look at my Naval Armor and Ballistics program which uses Nathan Okun's formulas.

Thanks everyone, will have a look. I'm more interested in tables as I can't wrap my head around most math formulas, so that Brassey's might do the trick (though it looks to be some 700 pages).

Just thinking of making some pretty simple rules for ww1 naval but want the numbers behind it for armor and penetration to seem a least a little accurate.

Akalabeth,
Save yourself a lot of time and headaches and play WWI Seas of War: link

Not sure what Seas of War is but thanks, the tables should come in handy!

Task Force Games' "Battlewagon" has tons of information for ships from WWI to WWII. It breaks down penetration numbers by range. I don't remember what the scale was however.

The game is available on wargamevault.

Cool will check it out.

Thanks Mobius after checking out some stuff, your program seems like the best option. Better than trying to reverse-interpret numbers from another game. Just gotta figure out stuff like ballistic co-efficient, drag and so on.
