"Mel Gibson is making a Western, it appears. Deadline reports that the filmmaker has been set by Warner Bros. to co-write, executive produce, and direct a remake of The Wild Bunch, a 1969 Western directed by Sam Peckinpah. That film followed a group of aging outlaws looking for one last score as the industrial age encroaches upon the American West. It's unclear what Gibson's vision for the redo entails, but Warner Bros. has apparently been keen on working with the filmmaker. He was reportedly approached to direct Suicide Squad 2, but ultimately turned the project down. Gavin O'Connor is currently set to helm that superhero sequel, but it appears WB found something else that sparked to Gibson's interest. This likely won't be Gibson's next film as a director, as he's already committed to helming the World War II drama Destroyer, which centers on the Battle of Okinawa. Mark Wahlberg is attached to star, and Gibson apparently plans on beginning production by next spring in Australia. So The Wild Bunch remake would be a ways off…." Main page link Amicalement Armand

I'm not sure what you could do that would elevate a remake over the original: it was not only entertaining, but the shock value grabbed you in a way no other western had previously. |

John Huston said they should not remake good films. Instead they should remake the bad ones and get it right this time. He should know the Maltese Falcon was a remake anyone seen the previous version(s)? |

Good point Jedburgh. Maybe someone will remake 'Braveheart' and 'The Patriot'. |

Why not just do a cinema re release of the original…. Obviously Gibson thinks he can do better? |
Oppiedog | 25 Sep 2018 7:52 a.m. PST |
Seen both previous versions of "The Maltese Falcon". Listen to Huston. |

I generally agree, but that rule gets broken. The remake of "True Grit" is much better than the original (and I love John Wayne). The Ben Hur we are all familiar with, with Charlton Heston, is a remake of a silent version. It too is much better. Hollywood has been remaking films since the very beginning. Sometimes with different titles to disguise the retread plot. |

Heck mankind has been doing this with stories in general since he learned to scrawl on cave walls. Re-telling a story for a new generation with a slightly different twist is part of how we transmit culture across time. |

I guess it will have to be PC. Maybe they will cast me as the stoic, arrow shooting Indian. |

Will there be ninjas? You can't have too many movies with ninjas. |

NO! A THOUSAND TIMES NO! While I agree with Pan Marek about True Grit up to a point, let's face it, the original was a John Wayne movie loosely based on a novel while the remake was the Charles Portis novel translated to film. On the other hand, look at the latest version of The Magnificent Seven and try to imagine what The Wild Bunch would look like given the same treatment. Make your blood boil? I should say! LT |

One of my favorite movies ! Don't think it really lends itself to a remake. They did a remake on Monty Walsh. As much as ah like Tom Selleck, Lee Marvin is and always will be Monty Walsh ! |

It is not just that they are remaking good movies. I t does high-light the fact that there are no original writers left in Hollywierd. Really how many times can you make Batman or King Kong? |
mghFond | 27 Sep 2018 8:54 a.m. PST |
Sometimes remakes are better. Sometimes they are just different but still enjoyable. 2010 True Grit was much better than the Wayne version and I say that as a Wayne fan. Also as a fan of the novel. The 14 year old actress who played Mattie was superb unlike the 24 year old one in Wayne's version. Mattie is 14 in the book too. I liked the remake of Magnificent 7 but it wasn't all that close at all to the original…don't forget, that western was based on the Japanese film 7 Samurai. Other times the remakes are awful. I could list some but I won't. My point being I judge each movie individually and am never gonna say no remakes. |
