Would infantry have dropped equipment prior to entering battle or would they go fully loaded down?

Loaded I believe

Loaded? I seriously doubt that, in most case they would probably has dropped their packs at their stepping off point. No point carrying all that extra kit.

Prior to battle troops often piled their equipment and left it under the watch of a senior NCO, those on the 'sick list' along with the regimental surgeon and staff, and regimental wagons including the regimental officers personal kit (which was often substantial).
