"The map was probably based on one of several sold by Danshui harbor pilot, a Brit by the name of Carozzi, to the French in Hongkong, for which he received a blood money of 50,000 francs (as an annual stipend, not a lump sum payment). The map was entitled: Entry to the port of Tamsui, Combat (Battle) of Oct 8, 1884. Let us now take you through the battle:…."

Excellent map and the English language account of the action would make for an outstanding Colonial Wargame scenario with most any rules. So, who makes French Marines for the period in any scale? Ditto the Chinese? And I know my Anglophilia is hanging out, but why do I think a similar force of Brits might not have done a better job? TVAG |

Don't know about the specific battle, but having read the Sino-French NAval War book from MMPBooks, most of the battle accounts on land are so one-sided as to defy believability. One battle for example had 41 French dead, 157 wounded while the chinese lost some 1500 killed or wounded. Another had 32 killed and 61 french wounded compared to 1500-2000 dead or wounded chinese. One campaign had 2,000 french attacking some 16,000 chinese. And though they got beaten back (after early successes), the french inflicted 10:1 casualties again. I'm not really sure how you could have a game of that and have the chinese player actually enjoy playing it. And on the Naval side of things, I think the French generally trounced the Chinese navy. Just as the Japanese would do later on in the first sino-chinese war, even though the Japanese ships couldn't really damage the two french (or german?) built battleships.
