"New photos released by the U.S. military appeared to show a greater French role in Syria than previously thought—but the images were quickly pulled from social media. The official Twitter account for the Special Ops Joint Task Force involved in the U.S.-led mission against the Islamic State (ISIS) in Iraq and Syria shared pictures Wednesday from the eastern Syrian province of Deir Ezzor featuring U.S. Army troops loading a mortar and a French light armored vehicle in the background. While France has been involved in the U.S.-led fight against the jihadis since 2014, this was the first evidence of the country deploying troops in this part of Syria. Even though images were soon removed from the account, several users caught them—including broadcaster France 24, which reported on it the following day…." Main page link Vive la France!

Drives me crazy when I hear anti-French noises from uninformed people here in the US. They're always surprised to learn that French troops are alongside ours all over the globe. |

I agree, I've worked with the French in Bosnia and Afghanistan. They were very professional troops and pleasant to be with. While we all make jokes about white flags etc the truth is that France has been at the front line of the war on terror since 9/11. |

The problem with the French military has never been the bravery of the French soldier, it's always been the idiocy of the French politician! |

this:
The problem with the French military has never been the bravery of the French soldier, it's always been the idiocy of the French politician! and a little bit of this, but not as much as one thinks:
…. and the sociopolitical inclinations of the French people. Been reading a lot of reports from French military analysts (retired senior operational officers) and was appalled at the matter of fact picture they were drawing. Whether in Bosnia, Afghanistan, Africa. France is poorly equipped, with poor combat doctrines, miserable training and dying equipment. Most of this due to continuous poor political leadership (absence thereof). Soldiers are motivated and craving for more training, better tools, clearer missions and organization, but at the end of the day do not re-enlist due to the poor conditions and direction.I think the German army is barely doing better (if not worse actually). Syria is a different matter, special forces, kept intact and highly trained. |
