Russia sent a couple of its nuclear weapon capable Bear bombers near Alaskan airspace on the 9/11 anniversary. They were escorted by a pair of Su-35 fighters. This is the second time this month that Russian bombers have been intercepted by US fighters near our airspace. link Perhaps their still upset with selling us the place for cheap, back in 1867, for 2 cents an acre. link |

The Russian and US Air Forces routinely fly along each other's borders. So did Soviet air force in its time. I'd be surprised if they didn't. |

In general, those are ELINT recon missions trying to stimulate the NORAD networks and then recording the results, both the radar/other emissions and the commo relevant to the tracked aircraft. Used to listen to Chicom AD comm all the time 50 years ago, same stimuli only usually Chinat aircraft. |

With Russia now long dominated by an ex-KGB Colonel I think we have to expect that Cold War conditions are going to steadily increase. Nothing much different now to the 70's, they still lie through their teeth, support their client/puppet states around the world, poison ex-spies in the UK, fly their aircraft on patrols near ours, etc, etc. And that just the stuff we hear about! |

Not much different from any time since at least the 1500s, actually. |

Ah. The Chinese developed hot-air balloons in the 14th C. Didn't know they were used to recon borders. |
