I finally got around to base and take photos of my first Hussars! These dashing men of the 6e regiment de hussards are now ready for a miserable time in Russia.

The minis are a mix of Perry and Warlord plastics, and in the blog are more Pictures of them. I tried out headswaps, using Perry heads on most of the Warlord minis, which I think did a significant difference in the end.

Fabulous. Anything that involves a bit of imagination and conversion/swapping gets me!

The result is unique to you, but then the painting is superb.

Well worth following the link to read the text in detail. A great review of the Warlord figures' potential.

warlord get a hard press and often deserve it, but can get some of their range right, if you pick and choose. This is great work.

Must ask. The trumpeter. Everyone shows a trumpeter on a grey horse, whether British, or Saxon, or Prussian….even though we all know not very likely. It is just something everyone does, however wrong….

Except for French. Now I know you have not got this wrong and thought about this, as only your trumpeter has a black sheepskin. Perfect. But he is now on a bay horse. It is Russia. Is he just lucky to have any nag at all?

Thanks! I agree that most of the Warlord cavalry kits have a hard time to stand up to Perry's cavalry, but I was surprised how much the simple headswap did in their favour.

Actually, I thought a bit about the horses. My boss raises horses as a side hobby, and it turns out that she raises a specific breed of horses native to southern France. This breed (Camargue) are specifically for tending cattle herds in the swampy areas around Marseilles, meaning that they are small, sturdy, and very sure-footed. This also made them suitable for light cavalry duty, and Elting mentions them being used as such in Napoleon's Italian campaigns at least. I've tried riding one of them, and it was unlike riding any "normal" horse.

These horses are also always purely white. So, as a tribute, I decided to make several white horses for my Hussars. In the end I didn't do as many as I thought I'd do, and even fewer pure whites. Maybe I'll get around to making an all-white unit when I do the elite company, but I'm not sure if it will look interesting or just a tad "too much"? But doing the musician on a dark steed made him stand out even more from the rest of the unit, which I feel is the job of a musician – to be easily found by his officer in the chaos of the battlefield.

So those were my thoughts behind the colour scheme on the horses. :)
