In the past year, I painted up a complete Spanish army of 491 figures and 8 guns, using multiple manufacturers (Brigade Games especially, plus Three Armies, Eagle figures, and Miniaturas Dos de Mayo).

Wonderful display, great looking units with all the colours – with striped poles, drummers, trumpeters, and the like! Might the dark blue artillery carriages be correct? I may be thinking of captured French pieces after Talavera, olive green. GdeP |

The "Cobalt Blue" I used for the carriages is probably too literal and dark/intense, and was probably a few shades lighter at least in actuality. They do make a pretty showing, though!:-) |

I agree Garde de Paris – a wonderful display! Also that the gun carriages are rather dark. The Spanish painted their gun carriages in a blue grey. The pigment was cobalt blue (as you say) which when exposed to weather faded to a grey. Additionally I don't think the light infantry would have carried their colours in the field. But if they did, from 1802 a battalion only carried one colour, which in the case of the light infantry – which only had one battalion – would be the Coronela (the royal coat of arms on a field of white). The Sencilla (the red cross of Burgundy on a field of white) were placed in storage – often in churches. I looks like you have square standards on the Dragoons where I would have gone for a swallow-tailed guidon. |

Carriage Colors – agreed, although I still go for a decidedly bluish grey; freshly painted, if you will! Flags – good point re: the Cornella (with the royal arms in the center) for the light infantry. I don't much care whether they carried the colors in the field or not; my toy soldiers wear their full dress uniforms, and carry their flags proudly!:-) I used the flags produced in Spain by Adolfo Ramos. If I were to have painted them from scratch, I might have considered swallow tailed guidons for the Dragoons. Am I going to change any of these things now… uh, no! |
