… stepping into medieval times'. "Until the day in September 1952 when his troopship pulled into the Korean port of Busan, Brian Hough had never ventured further from his home in the backstreets of Manchester than the beaches of Blackpool. Like most of the 63,000 British service personnel dispatched to support the American-led UN forces in the peninsula, the 18-year-old from Ardwick knew next to nothing about Korea, its people, or its history. The country that greeted him was a backward and staggeringly poor place. "It was like stepping back into medieval times," said Hough, who spent 13 months there with the 1st Battalion, King's Liverpool Regiment…." Main page link Amicalement Armand

Very interesting !
that greeted him was a backward and staggeringly poor place. When I was there with 2ID in '84-'85, there were still some places like that thru out the countryside. Very rural but much better than during the war(?). But Seoul had @ 9 million living there at that time. And it was like a "little NYC". IIRC Seoul is up to 12 million + today. |

Every time that I went to Korea there was an odor some of it is their farming methods some is the Kimchee some is sanitation. As a nation South Korea has has grown from a backwater down trodden nation to a proud and very advanced nation. Every time that I visited it was long hours and hard work but |

I agree ! The rural areas of the ROK, which there are many, you can't avoid either of those "odors" and some others(!) … The US FOB on the DMZ, Warrior Base, was surrounded by rice paddies on 3 sides. But yes, Seoul was/is a huge city with many retail stores, manufacturing, restaurants, clubs, etc., of all types. They are one of the economic powerhouses of the region. |
