What is the definition of "good guy?" You could argue that the North in the ACW was the good guy, but they did engage in civilly rights violations in Maryland. Until the Angelic host comes down on judgement day every one will be at least a little bad. |

Wars, and indeed politics, rarely have 'good guys'. Sometimes one side might be nastier than the other, but even then it is a matter of degrees. Conflict arises from rival groups of elites who wish to both exploit the same area and its population; or from rival groups who wish to exploit the same resource, or who view each other as existential threats. Both sides in the Napoleonic Wars had a point. From the French viewpoint the ancient regime was determined to crush the ideals of the Revolution and would not accept a Bonaparte Monarchy. For the Coalition, Republican France was an anarchist scourge and Napoleon bent on conquest of the continent. This is an oversimplification, but no one in government wanted a lasting peace without victory. It was a zero sum game, to win, one had to lose. Both sides fought to survive. I don't see that as 'good' either way. |
