"Have we misunderstood the true nature of equines? A new book probes an untalked-of "hidden history" of horses that reveals their ability to eat meat. Neil Clarkson reports.

The large bay stallion presented a terrifying sight, trotting down the road with the body of a dead child hanging from its jaws.

Journalist William Knighton had been travelling by horse and buggy through the streets of Lucknow, India, wondering why they had been deserted by locals.

The stallion spied Knighton and his companion in the buggy. The horse immediately threw the toddler on the road and set off after his new prey…."

What "hidden history"?

Race horse owners have fed their charges with fresh meat since Caligula's time.

And if you'd like your heirs to inherit early, climb into a paddock with a racing stallion. If you're lucky, they'll just bite your face off.

Anyone connected with the racing industry knows many thorough bred race horses are psychotic. There's a reason many such stallions are gelded. It's because they're unmanageable & very dangerous otherwise.

Cows sometimes eat birds and even rabbits. Deer do the same. Hippos too. The list is pretty long, really.

I guess it proves that not everyone can stick to a vegan diet 100 percent of the time. :)

Tradition fodder for the original Arab horses in the dessert was dried fish (!), no vegetable matter at all. Must have made things a bit fragrant.

Horses actually have pretty poor digestive systems for vegetarians, everything just passes through almost unchanged (like pandas) so they have to eat relatively large ammounts of vegetation to survive.

Blimey! This is really interesting! This may actually open the study of the actual use of horses in warfare in another light, i.e not in 20th-21st century perspective

Lindybeige, I bet you didn't know that!

Most herbivores are really opportunistic carnivores.

not everyone can stick to a vegan diet

It's quite common to see people confusing the difference between Vegans & Vegetarians. So in the interests of exactitude & by opposing sloppy use of language:

Not at all surprised.

One of my bunnies loves steak. And pretty much any sort of mexican food. Turned his nose up at cocopops though.

It gives another perspective on the K'kree of Traveller. Maybe their militant vegetarianism is just propaganda.

Maybe for a similar reason that's why they don't eat cows in India; Might provoke'em…
