We've had a case recently where someone broke forum rules, and when a staff editor tried to discuss this with them, the person unleashed a torrent of foul language and ridiculous, personal accusations.

Such behavior is uncalled for. The staff editors are trying to serve you. Please do not make their jobs unpleasant. (I know that the vast majority of you are pleasant and professional with the staff.)

For me such behaviour is not acceptable in any social context . I condemn it.

Maybe ask them for a fulsome apology, with the promise of publicity if they do not.

However if you grant people anonymity on a forum, then they are much less likely to behave in a pleasant manner. Of course they might just be socially inept?

If a TMP member is abusive i suggest that you insist they use their real name in the future. How about that for an idea? I expect they will quickly become "better" as the mass helps them achieve the control they cannot do by themselves.

Please pass my thanks on to your editors for the work they do.

You do realize, Martin, that you and I are now branded for life around here, don't you? 😉

I always thought "Andrew Preziosi" was an alias…..
MY real name is, of course, Arbuthnot Ochoin.

Peer pressure is not the most effective tool when dealing with a tool.

thumbs up

I know we are supposed to be adult men and women even though we play with toys. However, to lose control on an internet forum, much less go after staff, is disgusting. There are quite a few people here who need to grow the heck up.

Ragbones07 Sep 2018 9:13 a.m. PST

Sorry to read about this. It's totally unacceptable. TMP's co-Editors/Staff have always been helpful, friendly and polite. I can't understand why anyone would unleash a stream of invective on them. Or anyone else for that matter.

That's why I use my real name in forums as well. The T stands for Timothy in case anyone was curious. Internet toxicity is inexcusable but far too real.

Andrew Walters07 Sep 2018 11:58 a.m. PST

I suppose the occasional public reminder is worthwhile, but 99% of us don't need to be told that "unleashing a torrent of foul language" is unacceptable.

Perhaps you just wait a day for them to cool down, then ask if they still think the abuse was justified or if they would like to apologize. If the former they are welcome to that opinion, and you ban them permanently. If the latter, all is well if it doesn't repeat too often. Incivility on the internet will continue as long as it is consequence-free.

I assume Bill that said person has been usher into the void?

I assume Bill that said person has been usher into the void?

The person in question has had their account permanently locked.

Cyrus the Great08 Sep 2018 9:27 a.m. PST

You really don't get it do you? That person had no intention of coming back here. It is unfortunate that a staffer was the proxy for all the invective that the person wanted to hurl Bill's way.

The net makes it too easy to make vitriolic attacks because of the very "protection" the net provides. I.e. people will say things on the net they would probably never say in person face to face. Or they may get their Bleeped text handed to them. evil grin

Adults should know how to act like mature socially developed, etc., adults regardless of differences of opinions, etc. We fortunately have seen much less of that around here. As many of the "preps"/offenders have been purged.

However, all we have to do is turn on the TV news to see that civility is always not the case. No matter what age, station in life, etc., etc. … sadly.

Cyrus…you may very well be correct, but in all truth, Dear Editor has been pretty decent for well over a year or so, at least as far as starting fires in his own living room are concerned.

TMP has pretty much been a pleasure for quite awhile, though, obviously, what happens behind the scenes…

Darrell B D Day08 Sep 2018 1:34 p.m. PST

"Staff editors"? Who knew that TMP was such a corporate entity to have such things? Nice to know it is and weird to think anyone would want to hurl invective at them.

That person had no intention of coming back here.

He did seem upset when he was told his account was Locked, though.

It is unfortunate that a staffer was the proxy for all the invective that the person wanted to hurl Bill's way.

Some of the invective was directed specifically at the staff editor. And it's not rocket science to figure out how to send a message directly to me.
