Dunwich Horror maybe. The rest are sad very sad.

Coelacanth05 Sep 2018 7:39 a.m. PST

In the Mouth of Madness (John Carpenter, 1994). Not directly adapted from any specific story by HPL, but definitely has the feel of the Mythos all over it.

Cast a Deadly Spell with Fred Ward. Sort of a Big Trouble In Little China meets H.P. Lovecraft, good stuff.

SBminisguy05 Sep 2018 8:25 a.m. PST

The HP Lovecraft Society's "Call of Cthulhu" movie -- shot as a B&W 1920s silent movie.

Corman's The Haunted Palace 1963, with Vincent Price, Debra Paget, Lon Chaney, Jr., & Elisa Cook based (more or less) on "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward".

I love the Lovecraft Society's work, but for a favorite, I lean toward John Carpenter's The Thing.

Well, then there is the South Park story arc in which the stars align, Cthulhu arises, and Cartman turns Cthulhu into sort of a massively powerful evil pet.

Dagon.
Re-Animator.
From Beyond.

John Carpenter's "The Thing"?

Don't think that is a HPL movie….

+1 SBMinisguy

Great movie

Possession (1981) also starring Sam Neill.
Not exactly a Lovecraft story, I don't think, but very slow creep into madness and strange horrors.

Oh and it contains a love scene that "man was not meant to see"… sorta.

Winston Smith05 Sep 2018 1:28 p.m. PST

The Dark Shadows tv show used a few Lovecraft themes.

Meh !

MechanicalHorizon05 Sep 2018 1:53 p.m. PST

The Keep has a sort of "ancient horror" vibe to it.

That Babylon 5 movie.

Dagon is very close to the Shadow over Innsmouth.

Haven't seen the Dunwich Horror in years – liked it ~30 years ago!

Soaring Soren05 Sep 2018 2:33 p.m. PST

Dagon for me. Not a perfect movie, but it has its charms.

So, I see the word "best" but I read the words "least sucky".

My nomination … Legally Blonde.

Cyrus the Great05 Sep 2018 4:32 p.m. PST

"Cool Air" another from Night Gallery. Yeah, I know it's not a movie.

I can't believe no one has mentioned "Die Monster Die" which is based on "The Color Out of Space".

darthfozzywig05 Sep 2018 7:59 p.m. PST

Don't think that is a HPL movie…

Lovecraft didn't make any movies. Didn't write any screenplays, either, so what are we left with?

But Carpenter's "The Thing" hits pretty much all the Lovecraft beats – nameless terror from beyond the stars, buried horror in the ice, Things Man Should Not Know, the evil is inside us, etc. – and is a top notch film.

Good call – I bought it, ditched it during a clear out and them bought it again….

I think the third time SWMBO and DOM made me watch Legally Blonde, I started praying to the Old Ones to rise up and engulf the world in an orgy of blood and flame. That should count.

Covert Walrus13 Apr 2019 2:06 a.m. PST

+1 to Roving Bandit. And according to Sam Neill, it's the movie he is most proud of making.
+5 to Skippy. Maybe the best "Night Gallery" ultra short take ever.

Wegzo II08 May 2019 6:45 a.m. PST

The Resurrected (Charles Dexter Ward spin off with Chris Sarandon). Dagon holds its water, too. The Night Gallery shorts were always fun, too.
