When you base your figures, do you base them with a specific ruleset in mind, or do you base them so that they are useful for all rules possible? |

The gaming group decides what looks best for the period/ruleset we are using so that we all work from the same size. This might not agree exactly with the ruleset, but as long as we all use the same it seems to work. |

I routinely build both sides. I build generically following roughly these guidelines no matter the scale: If there's any skirmish possibility I seriously consider single basing. If not, I like square bases with 4-6 figures on there in 2 ranks. If the models are mobs or only operate in masses (Zulus, Tuaregs, zombies, civilian mobs, etc) I multi-base them in various quantities to accommodate casualty removal. |

Lots of armies, lots of answers. The old 30mm armies are based for CLS. Always will be. Otherwise, everything 20mm and up is individually based, or (1/72 only) in small clusters with some individuals so I can "make change." 15mm WWII is FOW-based. 15mm Medieval/Fantasy is DBA/HOTT based. 15mm Horse & Musket is a blend of NB/KK basing. Everything smaller is based on constant frontages to accommodate stand removal. Key is that they'll accommodate lots of rules, and the kinds of rules I like. If the rules say Army X must be four to a base and Army Y three to a base, the rules don't come home. MUCH easier to find different rules than to rebase troops. |

I only play a few rules sets, which have similar basing rules. I play one more often, so I go with that one's rules, ignoring the differences in the other rules' requirements. It works. Cheers! |

Mostly single based figures … I consider that generic basing. Sometimes I use trays for larger based units, sometimes just leave them free. |

I play mostly 25-28mm science fiction skirmish games, so I base everything individually, and I just give them as much base as they need not to fall over easily. I have started keeping my options open by using transparent bases. I had my first transparent-based figure on a wargaming table over the weekend -- just a Clix figure popped off its base and CA-glued onto about a 2mm thick clear acrylic square. He looked good, even after fumbling a medic task and making the CO's wound worse. |

Only basing for one set and making both sides myself – but increasingly rules seems to be moving away from specific basing |

Generally I'll base for rules that I prefer to play; I've re-based a couple of times for small works in progress, but I'd rather start a new collection for a different set of rules. Maybe that's why I have so many uncompleted projects. |

On steel bases for maximum flexibility. I play lots of different rules. |

All I do is 6mm. With Generally 3-6 or 7 figs on a base. I use various types & sizes of bases based on the models … |

I base them the way I like to base them, or whatever looks good for the period. Basing systems in rules can usually be ignored. And if it can't I probably just won't play those rules. |

I base for some rule sets: DBA, HOTTS otherwise I generally base on individual bases like for TSATF. |

I enjoy trying out different rules with existing figures. I don't rebase for them though. For 28mm (pre-20th Century) I like to have single based figures and use sabots for units. For smaller scales, normally element based; most rules these days will accept them without too much skulduggery. I guess if I were going into a detailed black-powder set that required particular conventions (different basing for 2,3,4 ranked infantry, for example, with different base widths) then I'd have to consider a particular basing format. Luckily that's not my thing. Just now. |
