Hello TMP. Long time reader, first time poster!

I have just published an update to my slowly evolving blog which covers wargaming the Battle of Inverlochy in 1645. A classic show-down between Montrose and Argyle.

This time I look at the figure ranges I've chosen. Previous posts cover the make up of the two armies.

Hopefully something of interest to other gamers of the British Civil Wars.

Great blog. The only point with which I disagree concerns the Old Glory figures. I like their style. The crazy expressions on the Old Glory figures look very realistic to me -- or at least that's the way I imagine I would look if someone where shooting at me or coming at me with a sharpened 15+ foot sharpened stick. Other than that I thought your analysis of the various figure ranges was spot on.

Thanks Kevin C! I completely understand – beauty is certainly in the eye of the beholder. If we ever meet up then perhaps I can donate some of my lead pile :-) .

Thanks Ken! Much appreciated. The period has been keeping me busy for some years now, but no complaints!

A friend and I just did this battle in 28mm. I had a blast building the Covenanter army for this. We had a great fight too. Waiting for Montrose to crawl out from hiding for a rematch…

I used a lot of Old Glory for my clans, but made up several units of irregular/highland pike and shot using Warlord, Eureka and Dixon. I also used Old Glory for my lowland pike and shot units. Old Glory are hard to beat for the cost when using the army card.

Hi rampantlion, my refights have gone both ways. but Argyle does have a big advantage in numbers that can be a challenge for Montrose. It is fun trying to make it challenge for both sides as a game.

I agree Old Glory can be very cost efficient, and if they look good to you then go for it :-) . Figure taste is a very personal thing, but it is great that we are all spoilt for choice.

Very glad you have returned to working on this blog! I missed several of your new posts and have enjoyed getting up to date. You are bringing great looking figures and a detailed approach to one of the most interesting battles of the period. Well done.

Thanks Guillaume! Much appreciated. You can't beat lots of highland irregulars clashing outside a ruined castle, on the shore of a sea loch, at the foot of Ben Nevis :)
