Napoleon was not French.

Capt John Miller03 Sep 2018 3:05 p.m. PST

Napoleon was a Corsican not French.

Rudysnelson03 Sep 2018 3:13 p.m. PST

No doubt Voltaire.

LOL. Wasn't Corsica part of France back then?

Either way, not being native born on continental French territory doesn't mean you couldn't have been a French citizen, or does it?

Isn't Corsica a part of France? A semi-autonomous "territorial collectivity" of France but French nonetheless?

Old Contemptibles03 Sep 2018 3:25 p.m. PST

Just the same way that a Norman is French.

Rallynow: "Just the same way that a Norman is French."

Or a Puerto Rican, like me, an American by birth (full US citizen). There's nothing to technically or legally keep any of us from running for the White House. It's a US territory. :)

If you asked a Corsican if he were French at the time I dare say, he was not a Frenchman.

Voltaire.

Cacique Caribe04 Sep 2018 9:29 a.m. PST

And yet he was taken in as the French Emperor. He was clearly adopted by France as one of her own. :)

Dan
PS. For the record, when asked what they are most Puerto Rican's identify themselves as such. But when asked about citizenship, we say American (US). Same goes for my wife. Depending on the circumstances, she will either reply that she is a Texan or that she is an American.
